I am a little new to coding, I just finished CS 1 in college, and I want to learn something that will get me more interested in doing my own projects so that I will be interested in teaching myself more.

Right now I want to learn some simple image processing like using a camera to tell different colors and possibly shapes. I figure that if I get really into a project Ill come across problems and try to fix them myself which will be better than just going to class.( I eventually wanna work on a virtual driving range but thats a bit off)

can anyone tell me where to look to learn? if so thanks.

There is a project called OpenCV (CV = Computer Vision) that is all about this stuff. You can also look at VXL, ITK, and VTK. Matlab also has many many image processing functions.
