I have not used Sql server.
I have microsoft sql server 2008 installed. but when i click management studio, it says evaluation period expired.
I can download sql server 2008 r2 developer from my university site.
Should i go ahead and download sql server 2008 r2 developer and uninstall microsoft sql server 2008? what is difference in both?

Yes.

It seems like you have a trial version of 'SQL Server 2008' installed on your machine and the period has expired. So what you can do is:

1) Just install the 2008 version from your university website. It should just update the existing version of your sql server.
2) Get the serial key from your University and then update the software.

Also make sure you back up any work with these programs you have made just as a precaution.

Defenatelly. Expired version in useless now. I am a student too, and I got a lot of software from Microsoft for free as well. Why not using it, if its leagal, and free of charge.
