Trying to get pypod working, and being stuck with "Umlaut" like öäü in filenames (linux)

- linux suse 9.3 with iPod patch from Sven Andersen (kaputtendorf)

- filenämes.mp3 have umlaut

- with much cheeting (explicit translation), I got char>128 translated into unicode (e.g. "ä"=ascii=132, unicode=228) and actually written onto iPod's audiodb as filename-utf8-tupple

- running pypod again returnd the former "ä" now being 195 - 164, (c3,a4) -> and of course, processed in audiodb.py again, does not translate into anything resembling the original filename anymode, results in "file not found" and worse, in destroying the iPod's audiodb.

read and tried everything with Unicode, and cannot get it to work :o

?? what is the characterset used in iPod's audiodb, anybody knowing what this c3,a4 for ä resembles
?? how to translat in this format (no encode/decode("latin-1") et. al. worked...)
?? how to teach python to accept 8-bit characters ("can't decode byte 0xc3 on position......")

Cheers - and happy New Year
