If the schools that my kids attend are anything to go by, it seems that high on Santa's list this Xmas just gone was an iTouch, iPhone or iPad depending how well off the parents were. That's understandable, they are just as attractive as gadgets for kids as they are to adults. But along with the never ending supply of free games, educational apps and the like comes the small problem of unfettered access to the Internet and all that brings with it. While adults may well have the family PC protected by parental control software to filter unsuitable content …

Couple of friends and me came to an idea of making our own distribution. Our idea is to make Linux distribution suitable for not so geeky people(eg.older people like your mom or dad,or young people like children in elementray scholl).Thats how we started making Ubuntu Home Edition.Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that everyone can use.Theres no commom unnecesary problems that cause headache to your family. We made our own update menager that allows them to update specific apps at time they choose. In addition to that UHE has enabled optition to clean it self every week,by "clean" i mean it cleans cache, history …

Hello all, Decided to post in here as thought it would be safer, and wasn't sure if I'd be violating any rules on any other threads. Basically I'm looking for a Family Fortunes-type game that I can edit (questions and answers) and use - and I need it for a few days time (I know it's very short notice, I didn't think about posting here till today :-( ). It doesn't have to be free, but as it's for an event for a charity, it would help. Alternatively if there is someone who can seriously create something in a few …

Hello people, I decided to make a family tree as a graduation project, I've thought about multiple ways to make it, but I like some fresh ideas, in case i forgot some things. I'm trying to keep the project as easy as possible, because in the end I will need to explain the code to my teachers. I already made a schematic how I would like the tree (All family trees look the same anyways so nothing new there). But the thing where I'm kind of stuck is the way to store/call the whole tree from the DB. Ok, so …

Following yesterday's interesting events - in which the story to which I referred changed three times and was then taken down within two hours of my linking to it - here's something a little lighter for the weekend. A family is auctioning its talents and above all its availability to endorse products on eBay. The story is here. Personally I think they've missed the boat and need to be a little more cutting edge. People can use the web and particularly social media in interesting ways. Have a look at www.fiestamovement.com and what Ford is doing - 50 brand advocates …

A British company claims to have developed software which can spot pedophiles online and catch them in the act of ‘grooming’ children in chat rooms and IM sessions. Just as handwriting and voice analysis is used by law enforcement agencies the world over in order to accurately determine age, so Crisp Thinking can use its Anti Grooming Engine (AGE) to identify the unique fingerprint contained within an Internet conversation to do the same thing. Given that according to US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales it is estimated that there are at least 50,000 pedophile predators, at any time, prowling the …

So a US Federal Judge says that MySpace is legally protected from any liability as a result of external criminal acts that have been committed by people misrepresenting themselves to other MySpace users. Judge Sam Sparks of the U.S. District Court for the Western district of Texas ruled that the 1996 Communications Decency Act excludes web providers and ‘information intermediaries’ from the action of their members when it comes to criminal acts involving content. This is, of course, intended to protect service providers from being put out of business by never ending lawsuits resulting from the actions of people over …

Does anyone ever watch "live" TV anymore, aside from Football games? With today's busy schedules, and active people, I am willing to bet a lot of us record our shows, such as ER or CSI or Law and Order, and then view them at a comfortable time and date. Today's gadget folks have a DVR, like TiVo; others use the old VCR. Either case, we both get burned when the networks run a show "overtime", and when they move it to a "special date and time". TiVo, a leading DVR service, has designed into TiVo 7.2.1 software the ability to …
