We do live streaming via a laptop. We stream in HD and need a very fast processor for sure. I am not sure how important the graphics card is in this but maybe a dedicated one would be best. I had purchased an HP laptop with an i7 quad core in it and a 950 GTX but for some reason it just could not handle the HD coming in as it would almost max out the CPU during our stream and would not work properly. The HP envy that I had said it was a dedicated GPU but it would …

I'll keep this one short, My girlfriend is on her second laptop were as i'm still on my first. She has an ASUS (i'm not sure of the model) and she's always leaving it on the floor next to the bed and falling asleep with it on her knee so it's been dropped once or twice. She's only just told me about this but when ever she tries to type using the built in keyboard extra letter are added, caps lock is turned on etc. I have used the on-screen keyboard and a USB keyboard without any issues so would …

One of my Christmas presents to myself this year (2009) was a new laptop. It's an Acer Aspire 7535-5020 with 4GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, Wireless LAN, Built-in Camera, GigaBit LAN, Modem (Does anyone use a Modem any more?), a huge 16:9, 17" screen and a full-size keyboard. It has to be the biggest laptop that I've ever seen. It's not as heavy as it looks but it's certainly not as portable as my Acer One Netbook. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium, which I quickly removed in favor of the more robust and feature-rich, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, …

It powers on and freezes at the Gateway Logo. The fan runs continuously and to turn the laptop off I have to hold the power button down for about 5 seconds. Before this started it was working perfectly.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote, "Has Linux Fallen Into a Well?." It was a tale of two brothers, aka The Cave Dwellers, who had too many complaints and angst concerning the Windows XP installation on my wife's old HP DV-5000 laptop. Reinstalling XP didn't do any good the last time I did it, so I decided to give them Ubuntu 9.04 in its place. All I did was to tell them how to login and left the rest up to them. Two days after the installation came the first question: "How do I install the Adobe Flash Player …

Yesterday, Apple announced significant price drops on many of its consumer products including the iPhone and Mac Air. This is an unusual move by Apple since it carefully controls its pricing--so much so that rarely, if ever, do its products go "on sale." So what's up with this big price drop? Is Apple out to "get" Linux? Is Apple feeling the pressure of competition from Google's Android, Netbooks, Windows 7 or something else? Personally, I think that Apple lowered its prices to better compete with an ever-expanding PC market, so the answer is really: All of the above. I think …

I saw a netbook at a discount chain store the other day that I want. It's an Acer Aspire One. It has 1GB RAM and a 160GB Hard Drive for $296. Awesome deal. The problem, at least for me, is that it comes standard with some whittled down version of Windows XP. This wouldn't ordinarily be a problem but I prefer Linux on my potential new netbook. Why don't you just buy one with Linux then? This store only carries the Windows version and I can't get the Linux one at the same price. Such a dilemma! My option is …

I've read almost a dozen articles in the past week about Netbook computers and am sorely disappointed with some of the news about them. The general consensus is that Windows dominates the Netbook space. The info was gathered from sales reports by Asus, MSI, Dell and Sylvania. This news is an amazing smackdown to those of us who were hoping that the Netbook space would be overwhelmingly Linux-owned. It's shocking, to say the least, that vendors would use a heavy operating system like Windows on a lightweight system such as a Netbook. What are they thinking? The whole point of …

Few things are more cringe-inducing than admitting to your boss that you lost your company-issued laptop. No matter how careful you are about securing your computer, sometimes all it takes is a second for it to vanish in a crowded airport or bus. To increase the chances of getting your laptop back, consider installing tracking software designed to help determine where the computer is being used and possibly even who took it. Hopefully, your company would pick up the tab but, if not, the $50 or so you'll spend is worth it for peace of mind. Jessica Mintz of the …

According to The Inquirer a new report by the Ponemon Institute, rather appropriately sponsored by Dell, has revealed that an astonishing number of laptops are lost at airports across the United States on a weekly basis. Asking questions of 800 business travellers at some 106 major airports in the US, the Ponemon Institute also discovered that on average only 30 percent of those lost laptops are recovered. Which is worrying as just under half the people taking part in the survey admitted their laptops are full of confidential business data. When you work it out over the course of a …

Amidst the carnage that is Wall Street this year (the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 20% since last October, classifying the stock market as being in official “bear” territory), there are glimmers of good news, and a good portion of it is coming from the tech sector. The latest manifestation of that is with the latest numbers from the personal computer market, which is performing better than expected. I would say “much better than expected”. According to the technology research firm iSuppli, global PC shipments are up 12% for the first quarter of 2008 – perfectly matching the 12% …
