Many Windows Vista users are experiencing problems with slow file transfers. In this guide we will learn a quick tip to improve transfer times. There are two ways we can fix this problem: by disabling Remote Differential Compression and Disable TCP/IP “Receive Window Auto-Tuning” and/or “Receive Side Scaling” in Windows Vista. Remote Differential Compression (RDC) allows data to be synchronized with a remote source using compression techniques to minimize the amount of data sent across the network. However, this Remote Differential Compression (RDC) feature in Windows Vista needs to be supported by remote computer, and it will compare the files and …

This is not really an issue, just more of an information gathering. I've read in many places to go to this location to change the Shell Interface icons in Windows XP... ""HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\explorer\Shell Icons"" My main question is though, where is the "Shell Icons" item in the registry? Every time I've looked in the registry and searched it I find nothing. Also I don't feel like extracting and compiling a DLL to get my icons to work for the system icons (My Computer, Network Locations, Start Menu, and so on). Any assistance would be great.

Hey, I recently found out how to shutdown another's computer using yours at school with command prompt and when I tried it, it didn't work. Here's the code: shutdown -i and when I click on browse, it says that the server is unavailable. And here at my school, we login to the network using an assigned 5 digit lunch number and a random password. We technically don't have an actual username to login with. I also learned how to send messages to another computer using command prompt and that doesn't work either: msg [/ persons lunch number] [/message time] [/message] …

Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth Here's how to Get it back: Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..) Here's how to get it back: Click Start > Run > type "gpedit.msc" This opens the group policy editor. Then go to: Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > QOS Packet Scheduler > Limit Reservable Bandwidth. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab : "By default, the Packet Scheduler limits …

Many of you know how to hide your important files and folders and burn them to disc to keep them from being accessed from other users, but if you your drive has so many files that it would take too long to copy all to disc, then why not hide the entire drive. Two methods, 1st one involves editing the registry, so again, back it up; 1st method found here; http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/hide-drives-from-your-computer-in-windows-vista/ 2nd method: Control Panel/System and Security/Administrative Tools, click on Create and format hard disk partitions, right click the drive you want to hide and remove the drive letter. Rename any folder with extension {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} e.g., if we have a folder games press F2, then type, "games.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" see the magic.... then to get to original form, remove the extension using "ren games.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} games" in dos or as a bat file and you are done.. But the folder can be deleted. ~cheers~ :)

If you use Windows, then it is possible to squeeze extra speed from your internet connection. By default, Windows reserve internet bandwidth up to 20% for various services such as Windows updates and spyware checks by using QoS Packet Scheduler, it is a network bandwidth management tool that can monitor the importance of data packets and depending upon the priority of the packet, give it higher or lower priority or bandwidth levels. It’s not very useful unless you’re using apps which are QoS-aware or running a server, so you can gain some network overhead back by turning it off. Check …

I think it is stupid that some online TV-channels and software suppliers demands that you must have an ip from "their" region. Therfore I would like to know if anyone knows a way around this. Nobody is getting hurt. There are only a few of us who are that nerdy. Also, I think this would help secure me from all kinds of "bad things"- It would not be easy for a hacker to find an adress that does not exist.

Hi all, I am wondering how computer shops deal with installing Windows multiple times. I understand shops can buy OEM packs for installing and setting up new machines but the scenario I am most curious about is when a customer brings in their machine to be fixed. Many times they do not have a Windows disk. They only have their product Key. I would imagine a computer shop must have to assemble a collection of every version of XP, Vista and 7 so that they can re-install customer machines that only have a Key. If this is the case, how …

Hi All: I use Notepad to save files I am putting up on the web, especially for Craigslist and SEO. I copy and paste my keyword lists into it; the problem comes with the way the words are organized. Craigslist prefers the keywords (and don't use that word in a Craigslist posting!) be horizontal; my lists, on the other hand, are vertical. I know of only one way to change the orientation: go to the end of each word and delete the return, then add a space (if needed). Does anyone know of an easier way to do this? If …
