The start button does make a comeback, sort of, in Windows 8.1 but it's still not enough to satisfy the die-hard 'I got Windows 8 but miss Windows 7' brigade. Not least as when you click the Windows 8.1 start button it doesn't pop up the old folder-structured start menu that many people miss so much, but instead it just takes you back to the start screen which those same folk have such a dislike of. Of course, if you right click the start button in Windows 8.1 it does produce a start menu of sorts, with one-click access to …

I use Skype frequently for voip. After I reboot, and for an indefinite time after, everything works fine. But eventually my microphone (Dell built-in) stops working. The party at the other end no longer hears me. It's not just Skype. Windows Sound Recorder doesn't pick up anything. Neither does Audacity. My thinking is that some app is grabbing the device and not releasing it. Is there any way of determining if this is the case? If so, is there a way to determine what app is responsible?

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I am now getting a window coming up saying: 'The application was unable to start correctly (0xC0000142)' when I run almost any program. A second click brings that program up normally. My searches on this error number imply that there might be something wrong with the registry, but I do not want to run any kind of registry cleaner until I am sure that is where the problem is. My scans for malware have not turned up anything. If it is the registry what should I use? If it isn't, where do I …

Hi. I have a Windows form and when it loads focus should be on a combo box. This works correctly but the visual indicator (dotted rectangle) does not appear on the combo box though it has focus. I can confirm that the focus is there as I am able to select using the arrow keys. I have tried using combobx.Focus() and combobx.Select() but none of them worked. Can someone please help and advise. Thanks

Hi all, I have a Windows 7 64 bit client that is running a 32 bit of software and so needs a 32 bit ODBC connection to the database. I of course ignored the Administrative Tools > ODBC manager because that will open the 64 bit and instead went to c:\windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe to input the system DSN connection. I went through the wizard and when I went to select the database got a message to say the server could not be accessed. I checked on the DB server that the SQL service was running, that the firewall had all necessary ports …

Hi! I bought a new laptop and it brought Windows 8, which I totally and absolutely HATE. It also did not bring a numbers pad, which I need for my work. I have since found out that I could get a numbers pad to use it through the USB ports. The problem is that Win8 for the most part ignores those ports. I cannot use flash drives with it, just as I'm able to do with my old Vista laptop. And researching online, I found the same complaint from other users. I know there is ahack for it, but I …

Hi. I have a c# project created in Visual Studio 2010. The project runs successfully on Windows XP 32bit but I get an error when building on Windows 7 64bit. The error is as follows: Could not load referenced assembly "C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll". Caught a FileNotFoundException saying "Could not load file or assembly 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.". When I change the path of the assembly from C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Visual Studio Tools for Office\PIA\Common\stdole.dll, the project builds successfully. Can someone please shed some light on this? Thanks

Hello; I got some kind of infection or something last week, which caused my virus software not to update, and finally my computer to totally crash and would not reboot. I successfully recovered my system from an image (it was one level up of messy from actual system restore - which never works, why is that?). Now explorer.exe crashes and restarts whenever I right click on files in explorer (not folders, they work as normal). This is true whether I click a file in a folder, or a file appearing over the Windows button. I need the right click for …

Hi - Some time ago I upgraded the old box (Alzheimers in the hardware) and jumped to W7HPx64. The new box has an i5-2400 CPU, FWIW. My problem is that it came with VisualC++ 2005 and 2008, but nothing later. VC++ 2008 has two x64 files and one x86 file. And, as usual, I need to add new versions. But, when I look through Microsoft's VC++ pages, it's confusing. Apparently, it's only for x86. But I can get VC++ 2010 SP1 which gives me a vcredist_x64 file? And there are some other updates, including a Security Update... So {what|which files} …

The not working account opens and then goes into a Not Responding state. It worked earlier in the day. The computer is a Dell 490 running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. There is also a problem with Word 2007 which won't open document files. Detect and Repair has been used and cannot find a fault either with Office or the PC. Microsoft's Search for a solution option pops up when Outlook as a …

I made great progress this morning in resolving a number of problems that were plaguing my Win7 laptop. It was difficult to find good info about how to resolve these problems. I can provide more details if anyone needs them. Here are the bare bones: * **High CPU** There are a number of common programs that churn the CPU. These are known problems but the Software companies don't seem to care. **CONDUIT Search Protect** From what I've read, this is almost like a virus. Softronic Download service has an agreement with them and include this in their 'Express' downloads. If …
