Are you one of those visitor's to this website who "LURKS" in the background. Sure you read a lot of the threads, but you just never seem to get involved by posting replies.
There can be several reasons for not getting involved, but let me tell you how I approached it when I first joined. My background is really not programming, web hosting or development, writing code, or computers, so at first, I too lurked in the background just reading and hopefully, learning. Pretty soon, something would pop up that grabbed my interest. I didn't know the answer, but it prompted me to attempt to find one. That then, led me to the various search engines on the Internet and various manufacturer's websites. I began researching the problem and sometimes, found the answer before others. That led to a post and I learned a whole heck of a lot in the process.
It's not difficult to take the subject, the product involved, and then start looking on the Internet. If it's a problem with Windows for example, the Microsoft help and support site is the place to began. You can also use Google and other search engines to look for topics which may contain your problem or be similar to it. Each web search will cause you to learn. (And don't forget, there is a search engine on Daniweb. If the topic was posted before, you can find it.) Use your favorites to bookmark things you come across which may be of help in the future. Create folders in your favorites to help you keep the bookmarks sorted. For example, you might want a different folder for the following: Adware/Spyware/Virus's, Diagnostics, Tutorials, and etc.
What I'm saying is that you don't have to be an expert on any of the issues to help someone. People who ask for help or assistance come from all over the world and some are very young and inexperienced. They may not know (yet) how to use the Internet to their best advantage. That's where you can help. You do the leg work and then tell them the results. Don't forget to give them info on how you got there, if applicable. It may encourage them to try to help themselves or others also.
Don't be afraid to get involved. Come on it, the water's fine. :D
