's pointer to Google's Q1 release was the right starting place; 's merger speculation and 's follow-up show how quickly rumor fills gaps after a big one-day move. Large intraday spikes are usually a mix of a fundamental trigger (earnings beat, guidance change, buyback or other corporate action) and market mechanics (short covering, heavy options flow, algorithmic trading). Straight attribution to a single cause is rarely justified without checking contemporaneous records.

Checklist for verifying what actually moved the stock on a historical date:

  • Company filings and press releases: confirm any investor relations release and any Form 8-K filed on that date for material disclosures.
  • Earnings call transcript and slides: read management commentary and guidance; note metrics that matter for ad-driven businesses (clicks, cost-per-click, regional trends).
  • Newswires and analyst research: look for broker upgrades or major wire stories that hit the tape the same day.
  • Intraday price and volume: determine whether the move occurred pre-market, after-hours or during regular trading; extreme volume supports a news-driven event.
  • Options and short-interest activity: unusually high options volume or high short interest can amplify moves via short squeezes.
  • M&A rumors: verify with official disclosures; rumors alone are unreliable.

Regarding the Yahoo idea: public record from early 2008 focused on Microsoft as a potential suitor; there is no disclosed SEC filing showing a Google-Yahoo merger then. For a definitive answer about the April 2008 jump, the company 8-K and the earnings call transcript from that period are the primary evidence.

Looks like they had a good 1st Quarter according to their report. Which probably doesnt directly tie in to the 90 pt rise but could be closley related.

Here is the Google 1st Quarter announcement: http://investor.google.com/releases/2008Q1.html
