Has anyone successfully created a heat map of the world using Google map? I read in few places that its possible but cannot seem to find the correct way to do it.

I need to create a heat map which is based on the global map, and shows the performance all of the world's unemployment rate. Some alike this swine flu map:

However I would prefer a Google Map solution as I also need to zoom into country / state level, is there a Google map plug-in available for such purpose?
