spyware and adware problems

My friend complained to me about having lots of spyware and adware always popping up, so I decided to give it a look over. I ran vundofix but it could not find any problems. Here is the hijackthis log, maybe I am missing something?

I just heard about this Vundofix thing about two hours ago. I gave it a cursory glance- isn't it created specifically for one malware or one family of malware? Or am I missing something? (Not being sarcastic, I honestly don't know!)

If you suspect your computer is infected, the first thing you should do is back up any important information (though try to save as little as possible, lest you carry over some of the infection with the files).

The best thing to do is boot into safe mode (with networking if you plan to go online for resources) and run scans with updated antivirus and antimalware programs. Press F8 on startup to get into safe mode. (Use whatever you have on the machine and perhaps some extra programs)

Another thing you can do is boot off of a UBCD or BartPE CD (www.ubcd4win.com) (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) respectively, in order to ensure that NO drivers or services are running in the background that are from your hard drive- to help catch everything. Plus, the UBCD (and Bart PE Cd if you take some time to install everything you want) has lots of different anti-malware and antivirus programs on it/them.

I suggest downloading and installing A-squared free and Spybot Search and Destroy. You can also get (if you want to download many things :) ) AVG Antispyware and Adaware.

(remember, you can have many many antispyware programs, but only one antivirus and only one firewall)

What protection is already installed on the machine?

What operating system? What specs? :) (This information is always helpful, don't leave it out! We can read long posts, they're more interesting :p )

You may also want to run some online scans, which are less likely to be interfered with by malware and viruses. Here's a list (that you'll probably see in a few posts around) of the ones I know about:

Remember, when it comes to viruses and malware, don't trust any one source! Some things are better than others, but nothing can catch everything!

Before running those scans, though (and/or maybe after) you may want to clean your computer of any junk files where some of these things might be hiding. A very useful program for this is ccleaner www.ccleaner.com , but you can use Windows' Disk Cleanup if you can't or don't want to download the program.

Windows SafetyScanner above also provides some junk cleaning. Both of these programs also clean your registry.

When you're done, post a new hijack this log and perhaps the results of a Prevx free scan http://info.prevx.com/downloadcsi.asp

I have not had any experience with Prevx, but many techies I know swear by it, and a lot of people around here have good faith in it.
