Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my message,

This afternoon I was taking a nap and I woke up two hours later to find that some malicious software had managed to install itself on my computer. Symptoms include but are not limited to: disabling windows update, windows verification failure, time converted to military (24 hour) time and "VIRUS ALERT!" in icon area of taskbar, pop ups, redirection on IE (not Mozilla, which I use), and fraudulent popups that claim I'm infected and need to download some software (I'm smarter than that, didn't click them). Anyway, I suspected a smitfraud infection, and ran through the usual routine of running smitfix, CCleaner, Ad-Aware Pro, RougeRemover FREE, SUPERAntispyware, and Symantec Antivirus. Almost every program caught and removed something, and most of the problems have been fixed except the VIRUS ALERT!, time problems, windows update not able to turn on, and the verification issue. While the problem is under control it is not fixed, and I am past the limits of my abilities and knowledge, which is why I'm reaching out to you who are much more capable than I. If you can, please help me. Please, assume I'm a complete idiot and didn't do a single step right, and walk me through whatever needs done from square one.

Thank you very much for your time and help. Here is my Hijackthis! log file:

Hi I just got suspicious about sxntkhrr.dll

Just scan with virustotal(http://www.virustotal.com/)

Thanks & Regards,
Siva

Thanks for your input. Here are the results:
http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/dcdbfaa99ef5ccb1229e49645654ba5e

To be honest, I can't make heads or tails of that, it is a bit confusing. :$

EDIT: Hey, one more thing to anyone involved with helping me fix this (thanks again!), I fixed the "VIRUS ALERT!" by going to the Regional Options and just configuring it out of the time bar. However, as it is symptomatic of a bigger problem, it's like taking Ibprofen to reduce a fever, a temporary solution that only masks a problem, not fixes it. Thanks!

Hello AH1,

My suspicious got it right... and that file is a Vundo trojan... A type of annoyance...
If your anti virus doesn't pickup, send it to them for analysis...

Remove this entry

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [9cf1f266] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\sxntkhrr.dll",b

using Hijackthis and restart windows.
Then delete the file after reboot.

Your PC should be fine now...

Thanks & Regards
Siva

I did as instructued, here are the logfiles as requested. My Windows Geniune Advantage notifier is still blinking though. I suspect the viruses deleted my Windows code. Can I restore it?

Looks like most of the overtly noticable problems have subsided, however Windows is still saying my version of XP doesn't pass the verification test. How can I restore my product ID?

Log is clean. Only way I know of is to contact Microsoft and explain what has happened. They should give you a new key. Did the verification alert come after doing a Microsoft update? Is there a chance that your OS could be a copy?

The virus had modified my product ID registry. I simply ran regedit and modified it back with my original key from my OS CD documentation, which fixed everything.

Thanks for all your help!

Hello,

New to the forums and having nearly identical problem.

Virus/Trojan/Malware cause 3 of my desktop icons to be deleted and replaced with links to fake websites locally redirected on my computer, disabled access to regedit and display properties, all local hard drives, "All Programs" in the start menu, all shortcuts in right column of the start menu (my computer, network places, etc), and changed all time stamps to display "Virus Alert!" instead of seconds/AM/PM.

Using the information in this thread I was able to fix most issues. However I am still unable to access my C drive and icons are missing from my start menu.

I was unable to fix the lost/deleted desktop shortcuts- I can remember what two of the shortcuts were but I think one will be lost forever (HAH! As I typed that I remembered the last shortcut- OpenArena, an open source first person shooter which I highly reccommend).

How can I fix the start menu issue and missing C drive issue?

I just answered my own question with a bit of tinkering- This WILL help other people.

You can fix the start menu by right-clicking on start button and selecting properties. Then go to "Customize" and select the "Advanced" tab. Go through the list and set things how you would like them to appear.

Next, to restore C and D drives to My Computer, download "Tweak UI" from M$. It is free and AMAZING- I've been using it for years and keep it installed on all my xp machines. Google search for XP Powertoys and download it directly from microsoft to make sure you are not getting MORE malware. In Tweak, go to My Computer and check the boxes next to any hidden drives.

i have trend micro pc cillin, and either that or spybot or a combination got rid of this virus.
(i really strongly recommend that you install spybot)
