Also, for whatever reason, I get a "Just In Time Debug Window" popping up everytime IE opens! Could this be related?

Hello, Jud...
Let's start with this cos it's quite a load of problems you have there...
==Download this file to your desktop: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
- to run it dclick combofix.exe and follow the prompts to start it. When finished, it will produce a log, C:\Combofix.txt - post that log in your next reply with a fresh hijackthis scan.
A word of caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs reboot to restore the desktop.
[ I could wonder how much of this comes from hanging round in sites like brdatahost / easycrack.net...?]

Just looking at you HJT log, (I'm new to them, so I'm trying to read as many as possible to get used to it) Do you have Norton antivirus and AVG antivirus installed? Or was that AVG antispyware?

Anyways, what you probably have is some sort of malware (I figure you figured that one out :p), and I can't really read your HJT or ComboFix logs well enough to make recommendations on them, but I do suggest running a battery of scans to take the shotgun approach to finding whatever nasties are in your computer. (In safe mode would be best.)

The first thing you should do is back your most important information up (not too much so you don't back the malware up too!)

Then:

Your best option would be to create a Ultimate Boot CD (www.ubcd4win.com), update the antivirus ant antispyware programs, create the disk, boot from it, and run as many scans as you can.

Short of this, you could slave the C: drive to another machine (after backing up the important data on both machines) and run a full set of updated scans with whatever protection you have on that machine and some online scans.

Kaspersky Free Virus Scan http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Trend Micro HouseCall http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Microsoft Live OneCare Safety Scanner http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

BitDefender Free Online Scanner http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

McAfee FreeScan http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?affid=294

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

Symantec Security Check http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/d...d=ie&venid=sym

Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeuse...ns/activescan/

If neither of these are options, run several online scans on your computer itself (doing it this way makes it more likely that the scans are tampered with, but the possibility is not that great.)

For the latter two of these cases, I also suggest downloading and running A-squared free http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

and Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html

Good luck! Hope this helps you somewhat,

Yes, I am running both Norton and AVG antivirus ... shotgun approach. :)

At this point, the IE popups have stopped, hooray! But I think I'll run some of the online scans as well.

Thank you for the suggestions.

0

Don't run two antivirus programs at the same time! (I wish you could but it's a bad idea). They'll conflict with eachother (espeically the active protection), each will think parts of the other to be viruses, and just general bad things can happen. It can lead to system lockups and unbootable systems! Neither program will work correctly, either, so you will be *vulnerable to attacks* :p

http://ask-leo.com/can_i_run_more_than_one_antivirus_program_antispyware_program_firewall_should_i.html

It *might* work if you disable all the active protection from one of your programs, leaving it to the other, and use the first program to run scans from time to time... Maybe.

I recommend AVG over Norton. Besides, you can run free scans from the Norton website (one of the links above).

Maybe- (I'm not sure how)- this caused your problem? Or maybe you got infected as AVG and Norton fought eachother?

Glad to hear you'r system is feeling better! Post back if it happens again.

Good luck!

I had disabled "auto protect" for Norton and only use it as a back up scan now.

Thanks for the warning and article!

0

Good call.

Norton isn't the best, but it's getting better. It makes for a pretty good backup- but I get physically queezy when I think of it being the front-and-center antivirus program on a computer. Besides, its active protection can bog you down!

And you're most welcome. :)

All the best,

JudBuz. You still have multiple hijackthis entries that require fixing and possibly some entries found in the combofix log (I didn't look :)), so please wait for Gerbil to reply and finish the cleaning up :).

0

Nice, Jud, that cleaned a lot of things....
Now, you have Norton and AVG AV services both running - this is bad. They will interfere, the consequences are unpredictable but one of them is usually poorer performance, they can be worse than that though. Remove one, now. Keeping Norton as an on-demand scanner is fine, but you would have to disable AVG beforehand. In my opinion I would uninstall one totally and if circumstances call for it use one of the many excellent online scanners which run from an Active-X control or similar downloaded pgm file. There are advantages to following this course... an online scanner will not be infected, for example... onboard AVs can be.
Okay, done it?... Good.
Before we fix some reg entries I need you to find out what this entry refers to:
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: AutoPlay.exe (User 'Default user') .... AutoPlay.exe is most likely benign, I have no way of knowing because it could be a file from many softwares; I suggest you check its properties to see who owns it [it willl be in system32]

Right. Now start hijackthis, select Scan Only, place checkmarks against all the entries listed below that still exist, and then press Fix Checked.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzfp32 - winzfp32.dll (file missing)

Fine. Please post another hijackthis log.
[You have an amazing number of rclick context menu items, iexplorer buttons and auto-startup items[the O4 entries]; they all hog resources, especially the autostarts which you are not actually using much of the time... - review them]

And some more of the fix:...
==Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) from http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
- Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd, select option #1 - Search [type 1 and Enter]; a text file will appear which lists infected files (if present). It will also create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C:\ .. Please paste the report in your next reply. DO NOT RUN OPTION 2 YET!!!

Uninstall SecurityCenter
Uninstall Web Buying
Uninstall 180Solutions - Search assistant

infos.exe : Search your entire system for this file and delete all instances found.
autos.exe : Search your entire system for this file and delete all instances found.

==Please copy the text between the lines to a notepad [format/wordwrap unchecked] and save as CFScript.txt to where you saved Combofix -that is, to a folder or your desktop.

Good. Now drag CFScript.txt onto Combofix [drag the icon if on your desktop, or the filename if in a folder]. Combofix will start, let it run, if your firewall prompts then allow all; post the log.

That's it; please post rapport.txt, combofix.txt and a fresh hijackthis log.

Thanks for the help! I just got back to my computer and will attempt those fixes now ... starting w/ commment #12.

Hey Gerbil,

I found three files w/ "AutoPlay.exe." One is located in C:\Documents and Settings\[ComputerName]\ASPNET\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. I think this may be what you're referring to. The file was last modified in 2001.

The second "AutoPlay.exe" file is located in my "hp/bin" dir and has a modified date of 2001. I believe this came w/ the computer (HP Pavilion).

The third file is actually called "wpdshextautoplay.exe." I included it because it was the only "autoplay" file that located in the system32 folder.

I'm not sure if that information helps any. I'm going to go to the next step now and run HijackThis Fix checked.

Okay, all scans and removals completed. Here are the latest log files:

Hello, Jud,
those autoplay files which you found are fine, thank you...
The log is clean, but there is one final point, did you install VNC Server deliberately?

If you did, fine, you are clean to go.
