Short expert follow-up for anyone who finds this thread later. brought a family XP machine with persistent popup ads, guided removal using SDFix and Malwarebytes, and reminded everyone about running an AV. Those are the right first moves. To be confident the system is truly clean and to prevent reinfection, follow the concise verification and hardening steps below.

First, verify removal with current tools. Update your antivirus and anti‑malware definitions and run full scans. If possible, run an offline/bootable rescue scanner and a rootkit check. When using HijackThis or similar cleaners, back up the registry or create a restore point before fixing entries, and only remove items shown safe by experienced helpers. When you post logs for help, paste them inside CODE tags so formatting is preserved.

Second, eliminate reinfection vectors. Old System Restore points commonly harbor copies of removed malware. After cleaning, disable System Restore on all drives, reboot, then re-enable it and create a fresh restore point so old snapshots are removed. Also scan any USB/removable drives and disable autorun for removable media.

Third, tidy browser and startup hygiene. Inspect IE add-ons/BHOs and Firefox extensions, reset proxy/LAN settings if a local proxy was set, and remove unknown toolbars. Use msconfig or Sysinternals Autoruns to audit startup and Winlogon entries. Uninstall unused legacy apps, keep Java/Flash/plug-ins either fully patched or removed, and run daily work from a non‑Administrator account.

Finally, prevention: enable the firewall, keep automatic updates on, maintain regular backups, and consider migrating from unsupported OS versions or perform a clean reinstall if suspicious behavior persists. Thanks to and for the walkthrough; if popups return, collect fresh HJT/MBAM/scan logs (in CODE tags) and seek follow-up.

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
    All
    ,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
    registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
    will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
    display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
    contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
    a new HijackThis log.

    Please post the SDFix log within CODE Tags.

==

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll (file missing)

O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Acrobat Speed Launcher.lnk = ?

O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c0058BA6 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c0058BA6.dat

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:

N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src

If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.

===============

Delete the following file;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c0058BA6.dat

====

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Make sure that you restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

And the log from Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware?

Hey sampson: don't you guys ever run an antivirus program on your computer? I have one running whenever I boot my computer and have never in the past 10 years had a problem. The antivirus program won't allow a download if the file contains a virus. There is no excuse for catching a computer virus today (except in rare cases where its a new virus).

Sorry I forgot to post this. I became preoccupied trying to post that other log without those darn smilies.
