For — streaming-caused spikes usually come from one of four areas: a browser extension or helper, a media codec/plugin, a graphics/acceleration mismatch, or something malicious. Tackle the problem in a short, ordered way so the real cause becomes obvious instead of guessing.

First isolate the browser: try the same stream in a different, up-to-date browser and in a fresh user profile (or the browser’s “safe” / no-add-ons mode). If the problem disappears, it’s an add-on/plugin. Disable all nonessential helpers, restart, then enable one at a time until the offender appears. Clearing the browser cache before retesting removes corrupted temporary files that sometimes trigger retries and CPU spikes.

Use a process inspector to find where the CPU is being consumed (which process, which module or thread). The Sysinternals Process Explorer is ideal for this and shows DLL paths and thread stacks so the responsible component can be identified precisely: Process Explorer. Run up-to-date on-demand scanners to rule out malware: reputable options include Malwarebytes and the .

Also update graphics drivers, codecs and runtime players; disable hardware acceleration in the browser/player while testing. If a download-manager or media-capture helper is present, temporarily exit/uninstall it — those utilities often hook video streams and increase CPU or leak memory. Finally, note that very old operating systems and browsers are unsupported and can behave poorly with modern streams; moving to a maintained OS/browser stack (and removing obsolete plugins such as deprecated players) improves both performance and security. Take snapshots of process names and the module path before removing anything, and avoid deleting system files without a backup.
