I am running Windows XP. This past Sunday, Internet Explorer started running quite wild. It would just keep opening up by itself, some pages would say "content cannot be displayed", others would open up to advertisements. I counted 48 IE's opened all at one time. I have run my onboard Antivirus (McAfee) two free online virus scans(Bitdefender and Trend Micro). I also have run Spybot, Ad-aware and Superantispyware. I have run McAfee and spyware programs in Safe Mode with System Restore off. Internet Explorer seems to be OK now, but here's the thing now. Everytime I open up Mozilla/Firefox, those Internet Explorer Advertisement windows keep opening up. So I'm thinking there still is something lurking in my computer. I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Hi welcome to daniweb,
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Also download HiJackThis
Perform a Full System Scan with it. Save the log and post back here with the MBA-M log and the HiJackThis log.

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone has had a chance to look at my HijackThis scan results. My Internet Explorer Popup advertisement windows seem to have stopped. Just wanted to know if there is anything suspicious in Hijack This. Thanks so much.

Run another one ok? Sorry about that.
Judy

I am only wondering about 1 entry in the log, that is this one:
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: hhcefv.dll
so how about trying this program:
SDFix
Download SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop:
double-click on the SDFix icon that should now be residing on your desktop. If a Open File - Security Warning box opens, click on the Run button.
A window will now open showing SDFix being extracted into the C:\SDFix folder. Once the installation program has finished extracting SDFix, it will open a Notepad with further instructions.
Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer

2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.

3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear

4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

5. When you are at the logon prompt, log in as the same user that you had performed the previous steps as.

When your computer has started in safe mode, and you see the desktop, close all open Windows.

Click on the Start button, click on the Run menu option, and type the following into the Open: field:

C:\SDFix\RunThis.bat

Then press the OK button.
The SDFix window will open, containing some brief info and a disclaimer on the use of the tool, please press the Y key on your keyboard and then press enter.
SDFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections.
When the scanning process has finished you will see a new screen stating that you need to restart your computer in order to continue, press any key on your computer's keyboard in order to restart the computer.
After your computer reboots SDFix will automatically start and perform a last check. You will now be presented with a screen stating that SDFix has finished. At this point you should press any key on your computer's keyboard in order to continue to your desktop.
When you are back at your Windows desktop, the SDFix log will automatically be opened in notepad. Save this log and post back here with it.
Judy

Hello Judy,

I followed your directions for SD Fix, however when it finished a log did not automatically open in notepad. I'm guessing I have to do this all over again? Thank you.

Look in C:\SDFix and see if the log is there.

Hi,

OK, I found "report" in SD Fix in my "C" drive. I hope this is what you needed. I couldn't find anything that said "log".

after you place the check marks click the Fix Checked button.
Exit HJT.

Next update MBA-M. Then boot to safe mode and run a full system scan with it, remove items found and save the log.
Boot back to normal mode, run a new HJT scan and save the log.

Looks good. Do things seem to be running well?
Judy

Hello Judy,

Yes, those nasty Internet Explorer popups seem to have vanished. Other than the computer running slow, it seems to be back to normal. Thank you so very, very much for your help! I appreciate it very much.

There are steps you can take to speed the computer, one is stopping unnecessary start ups and sevices, I can give you a list of those if you wish and CodeStuff Starter is a good free program to help control these, a general clean up, meaning getting rid of unneeded temp files and the like. A disk defrag can help speed it up, you can use the built in defrag or there is another one, Auslogic Disk Defrag you can download that works well and faster.
Judy

Hello Judy,

Yes, I would appreciate the list you spoke of. I definitely will try the two other programs you suggested. I would love to get this Dell computer running a bit faster than it is. Thanks so very much.

First of all, since you have Dishkeeper light on the computer then I would not install Auslogics Disk Defrag. Dishkeeper is a good program and like Auslogic's program runs faster than the built in Windows Defrag.

Now for the unnecessary starts ups:
Using CodeStuff Starter begin with the Start ups Tab and remove the checkmarks from these listed below. Be sure to read what each controls. Some absolutely are not needed for the program to run in order to run the program manually and listing as auto starts only really just speeds the start up of that particular program by a few seconds, but can slow the computer if running all the time in the back ground, others will be your choice on whether you want them to start automatically or not. But none of these are required to auto start for the running of the computer.

SigmatelSysTrayApp----System tray program for the Sigmatel Audio sound card. Often found on Dell computers. This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
ATIPTA---Control panel for the ATI series of video cards allowing access to such features as display resolution, colour depth, etc. Available via Start ->Settings -> Control Panel -> Display. Some users may need it if they have optimised their settings. Choice is yours.
MBMon-CTMBHA.DLL----?Related to Creative_Audigy line of sound cards. Sounds like it helps Windows control the audio on your motherboard. No info as to whether it is required or not. Could be disabled as a trial and then easily re-enabled if it is found to be needed.
HostManager---Added by AOL Online. When run, this program starts the AOL tray icon. The tray icon gives end-user's Internet connectivity status, the ability to launch a standalone dialer similar to Windows DUN and access to AOL diagnostic data. This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
AOLDialer---AOL ISP software dialer - can be activated through a desktop shortcut
ISUSPM Startup---InstallShield Update Service Scheduler. Automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software so you’re always working with the most current version. This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
WinPatrol - "Manage Startup programs, tasks, cookies; will sniff out Worms, Trojan horses, Cookies, Adware, Spyware, Quite honestly there are programs which do a better job of most of these things. I would uninstall this entirely. But choice is yours.**See below**
SunJavaUpdateSched---Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. This doesn't work half the time anyway. Remove it....PLUS you do need to update your Java, yours is way out of date. Will explain this below.*
Creative Detector--- Auto-detect and play a DVD when using a Creative Soundblaster Audigy2 soundcard. Uses about 2.2 MB of memory. Disable it by heading to the MediaSource DVD Audio Player, selecting Tools, then uncheck the Auto Start box. It should not start up automatically again

These next ones will be located in the Services Tab.

Entries in that tab are in alphabetical order. Double click an entry to get to the place to change these entries. If it says it is Running, then Turn it off first there. Then change the start up to either manual or disabled. Unless noted, I would set these to Manual.
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service (aawservice)---Totally UNNECESSARY. Really does nothing unless you have the paid version of AdAware. Other programs do a much better job. Turn it off and set start up to Disabled.
PhotoshopElementsFileAgent.exe---Adobe Active File Monitor watches folders for the Organizer.
If you don't need that capability, there's no reason not to disable it.
AppleMobileDeviceService.exe---Used by iTunes to communicate with the Apple iPhone when it is connected to your computer. Whether or not you need to run this program on startup must be decided by you. If you feel that you want this program starting automatically so that you have it available as needed, then do not disable it.
Ati HotKey Poller-Ati2evxx.exe---Part of the ATI video driver that allows you to specify hotkeys to change various display settings. his program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
Bonjour Service---The Bonjour Service is typically installed with the iTunes software. Apple's site describes: "Bonjour, also known as zero-configuration networking, enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks."
Canon Camera Access Library 8 -CALMAIN.exe---Installed as part of the Canon digital camera software. This service is required to start if you wish to use the Canon CameraWindow software. If you don't use this software this can be disabled.
Creative Service for CDROM Access-CTsvcCDA.EXE---Resident program for Creative's PlayCenter included with Soundblaster Audigy sound cards - speeds up detection of some media CDs if the system doesn't natively support them. Available via Start -> Programs
Dcfssvc - Eastman Kodak Company-dcfssvc.exe---Associated with digital cameras and can cause problems which disappear if disabled. If this program is unchecked in startup, your camera will not cause your computer to open a pop-up window when you connect it. Leave enabled if you can't load pictures from your camera/dock - Kodak's dock is an example

*Now for your Java program updates. You first need to go HERE and download the OFFline install for the newest version 6 update 11. Save it to the desktop.
Once you have downloaded that install file then go to Add/Remove and UNINSTALL ALL the old versions of Java that you find there.
Once all are uninstalled then go to that install file on the desktop and double click to install the latest version. Once the install is complete then go back to the download page and on the Right side you will see Verify Now. Click that to go to the verification page where you can make sure that the installation was successful.
**Now to protect your computer from malware, spyware, hijackers, dialer and other items I recommend using SpywareBlaster. An excellent, FREE program from javacool and what is especially great about this program is that it DOES NOT run in the background and consume necessary resources. To quote from their web site:

* Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware and other potentially unwanted programs.
* Block spying / tracking via cookies.
* Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted or dangerous web sites.

Download, install, update, Enable All, including the Restricted Sites portion of the program. Close the program and that's it. Just check for updates each week and enable any new ones installed.

Once you have completed all the above then you need to set a new and clean Restore Point. To do this Right Click My Computer. Choose Properties. When System Properties opens then click the System Restore Tab. When that opens then put a check mark INTO Turn off System Restore. You may receive a window or warning telling you that it is turning off and all old restore points will be lost. Click ok. Allow it to turn off. Wait a few moments and then go back in there and REMOVE that check mark you just placed to turn System Restore back on.
Judy

Thank you Judy. I will get started on what you recommended here.

You're welcome. Remember, any programs you disable from start up can always be re-enabled if you feel you want them to do so.
Judy

Hello Judy,

I apologize for not reporting back here sooner. The computer seems to be running a little faster now. Thank you. My son thinks I have way too many programs, etc. in the computer and said I should consider removing some to help also in speeding up my computer. I thank you so very much for all your help. It was very much appreciated. Also thank you for writing your recommendations in terms that a computer novice like me would understand. Your directions were very easy to follow.
