Hello Aebeyes- welcome to our forums. :)

Your log definitely does show indications of a few different infections, but I can't give you a full response right now due to the fact that it's dinner time in my end of the world.

I'll pass a message on to a few of our other spyware experts and ask if they can help until I'm able to return tomorrow.

Hi and welcome.

===============

Please go here and have this file scanned.

C:\WINDOWS\regedit.exe

If it comes back bad, run hijackthis and;

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

End process on it then delete it.

This one too;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\AvidSDMService.exe

===============

We need to see if there are any program segments (prefetches) that may be present and are connected with the problems you are having. To do that, please do the following:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

stisvsq.exe*
svshost.exe*
msqdevl.exe*
lssas.exe*
mservice.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch
WhenUSave

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Config..."
2. Click "Misc Tools"
3. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\stisvsq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svshost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msqdevl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\lssas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mservice.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AvidSDMService.exe
C:\Program Files\Save\Save.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt by going to the start menu and then select 'Run'.

In the box that pops up type in 'cmd'. The command prompt will open.

OR

You can go to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. Unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u drexinit.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save typing them in.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

C:\WINDOWS\lssas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mservice.exe

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting your PC, post back a new log and let me know how everything goes.

O23 - Service: Avid SDM Service (AvidSDMService) - Avid Technology, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\AvidSDMService.exe
O23 - Service: Avid Startup (AvidStartup) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\AvidStartup.exe

Those entries were actually probably valid; they're components of some of the the digital audio/video editing and multimedia storage packages made by Avid Technologies/DigiDesign.
However, if I recall correctly, they don't need to run as start-up services unless you're using certain types of Avid storage solutions.

Aebeyes,

1. Judging from your latest log, it looks as though the nasties are gone. How does the system appear to be working now?

2. There are viruses known to either infect or replace notepad.exe; you may be infected by one. One quick thing to check is the file's size- on XP, C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe should be 65KB; if it's some other size, that's a good indication that you're infected. Even f the size is correct, you should still run a couple of anti-virus scans to be sure:

- Get the most current updates for your McAfee anti-virus and run a full scan with that.

- Do at least a couple of these free online scans as well:

Hello DMR and crunchie

System seems fine now and notepad seems intact aswell with 65kb and with no infection

All in all I am one happy customer :D :D

Thanks to you helpful folks

Hello DMR, crunchie and other enlightened experts

Just wondering is there any preventitive measures I can take for future infections....especially this home page hijack! has happened a few times to me and each time somehow I managed to escape serious damage.
Only this time upon discovering daniweb I found out there is more to these infections than I previously thought.
Naturally to complete this enlightening cycle, need to know the preventitive strategy..if not 100% to a certain extent!
I have the latest mcafee security suite.

Thanks in advance

ABS

Hi again. This is my standard spiel upon having a clean log.

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the setup instructions.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Download Spywareblaster, from www.javacoolsoftware.com install and keep it updated to help keep your system clean.
Once you have checked for updates, click the 'enable all protection' link.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others. Go here

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Once done, I would also do the following;

After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Please note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Thanks for your help crunchie, it has been a great to have discoverd daniweb with helpful folks

Regards
ABS
