Within the past week or so, Norton has been prompting me that my virus definitions are out of date and that i must renew my subscription in order for my computer to be protected. I dont know how this could be since i purchased Norton only about 2 months ago.

My subscription renewal date reads: 12/30/1899

Ever since this happened i started receiving this popup that sits at the bottom of my taskbar called AURORA. Also, Norton advised me that my computer is infected with a TROJAN HORSE.

I dont know if these are all related. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Aurora1899, welcome to DaniWeb :)

so that we can see exactly what you have running on your system, I suggest you get the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here (in line 2):
http://www.malwareremoval.com/downloads.html

Then close any open browser windows, 'Scan and Save Log' with hijackthis, copy the log, and paste it here in this thread.

Thanks for the quick reply. Alright, here's the HJT log:

You have a few different infections, so this will take a couple of steps. Please be patient:

1. Remove Newdotnet, either from your Add/Remove Programs control panel, or by going here and scrolling down to the uninstall tool.

2. Go here for the instructions on how to remove the Bube.d (aka Win32.Beavis) Removal [isrvs] infection. Please follow the removal instructions exactly.

3. Once done, repost a new log here and we will finish off the clean up.

Thanks for your response DMR. I successfully removed newdotnet from my computer. =)

For the Bube.d virus, I went to the website you suggested and downloaded the KAV trial virus removal tool and continued to follow the instructions. However, once installed, the virus program detected several different viruses, prompting me to delete (recommended) or skip. This happened about 5-6 times, i deleted the first 2 and skipped the rest. Then, suddenly, my computer just shut down on me and rebooted.

Upon reboot, the virus removal tool opened again, continued to give me delete/skip prompts. Everytime i tried to open my browser, it would search for a bit and then immidiately close the browser. Eventually, the computer would reboot.

I had to uninstall KAV in order to use the internet and post this.

help?!?!

Thanks!

Hang in there. I have to go offline for a bit; if none of our other helpers pick up on this in the mean time, I should be back in a couple of hours or less.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please run Notepad and copy the following text into a new file:

@ECHO OFF
cd %windir%
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
cd %windir%\system32
attrib -s -r -h DrPMon.dll
del DrPMon.dll
exit

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Reboot into Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly -- this is normal.

Run Ewido, and do a full scan.

Scan with HijackThis and have it fix the following entries:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: BolgerObj Class - {302A3240-4805-4a34-97D7-1645A0B08410} - C:\WINDOWS\Bolger.dll
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
O23 - Service: cusojwqpeitd (wbcpqjhv5) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\lszqkmgr5.exe (file missing)

Be sure all windows, other then HijackThis, are closed before hitting Fix checked.

Reboot into normal mode and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

When i ran Ewido in safe mode, at 83.3% it would prompt me to delete/delete all/ignore an affected folder for a C:something?/isearch.?? I ignored the first time and a window popped up and said Ewido had to shut down. I ran it again and it stopped me again at 83.3% with the same prompt. This time i clicked delete, but Ewido still shutdown.

So, I continued and ran HJT and looked for the entries you said to delete. I could only find:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O23 - Service: cusojwqpeitd (wbcpqjhv5) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\lszqkmgr5.exe (file missing)

But i could not find:

O2 - BHO: BolgerObj Class - {302A3240-4805-4a34-97D7-1645A0B08410} - C:\WINDOWS\Bolger.dll
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

I did not click FIX THIS since i could not follow your steps 100%. SHould i continue to delete Nail.exe and 023 - Service: cusojwpeitd anyway???

Thanks.

It won't hurt anything to try to fix only parts of the problem at a time; sometimes certain things may return if related items are not fixed, but it doesn't hurt anything to try.

Go to Windows Update and get SP1a for both XP and IE.

Try updating Ewido and then scan again. If it still doesn't work, try CounterSpy from here:

http://www.download.com/3000-8022_4-10337358.html

Before scanning the first time, make the following adjustments to the settings:

At the very top, click on File, and then Check for updates
When it’s finished updating, click the Close button

Under Spyware Scan on the left, click on Run a spyware scan
In the left pane, click on Scan Options
Mark Full system scan
Check all boxes under Full system scan, including Save these options
In the right pane, near the bottom, click Manage Schedule
On the left side, select your preferred schedule options
On the right side, under Scheduled Scan Options, check:
Always run a deep scan
Automatically remove spyware cookies

Click the Update Schedule button

At the top, click on System Tools
Double-click on History Cleaner
Check the following options (if they are not grayed-out):
Internet Explorer History
Internet Explorer Cookies
Kazaa
Temporary Internet Files

Review the list for any other History items you wish to clean
At the bottom, click Remember checked
Click on the Clean History button
Click the Yes button, and then the OK button

Click Back at the top
Double-click My PC Checkup
Click the Start button
In the first part of the list, uncheck everything up to any ActiveX entries; the entries you uncheck can be checked later, individually, to ensure they won’t interfere with your browsing habits (for maximum protection, however, you may leave them all checked)
Leave all ActiveX entries checked
In the second part of the list (Items already changed below…), leave all entries checked
Click the Continue button
Click the OK button

At the top, click Spyware Scan
On the right side, click the Scan Now button
This will take awhile depending on the size of your drive(s), number of files, CPU, etc. (40 minutes on my computer)
When the scan is complete, use the drop-down arrow next to each entry and select Remove (if you see any entries that you think you may need to keep, you may choose Ignore for now and post them for recommendations)
Select Create restore point if you want CounterSpy to create a System Restore point
At the bottom, click Take Action
Click the Close button and exit the program

Close any open browser windows, scan with hijackthis, and post a new log please.
