Having problems running AIM and cannot seem to get rid of the "My Way Search Assistant" from the Add/Remove programs. Not sure how the dang trojan got in in the first place-please help!?

Good progress in the thread: resolved the AIM issue, and and correctly identified two common causes — an OEM preinstall or an orphaned Windows Installer package. When the Control Panel still shows an uninstall entry but program files are gone, the entry is usually a leftover Windows Installer record or a registry stub. The steps below show safe ways to locate and remove that record without repeating deletions already discussed in earlier replies.

First, make a System Restore point and export any registry keys before editing. To locate a Windows Installer product and remove it cleanly, list installed products and their product codes, then call Windows Installer to uninstall the matching product. Example commands (run from an elevated command prompt):

wmic product get Name,IdentifyingNumber
msiexec /x {IDENTIFYINGNUMBER}

Replace {IDENTIFYINGNUMBER} with the GUID shown by WMIC for the offending product. If WMIC does not return a match, search the registry under the usual Uninstall keys for an entry whose DisplayName matches the product and inspect its UninstallString. Export that key before removing it.

When no usable installer exists, prefer tools that remove orphaned entries rather than manually deleting random files in C:\Windows\Installer. The Microsoft program-installation troubleshooter or a reputable uninstaller utility can safely clear the Control Panel stub. Use Autoruns (Sysinternals) to find and remove any leftover BHOs, toolbars or startup entries rather than hacking them out blind. In regedit, back up and then remove only the Uninstall key or the specific BHO key that references the unwanted component.

Finally, confirm Internet Explorer search/provider and homepage settings are restored (search scopes and search-assistant values), run a full up‑to‑date anti‑malware scan to ensure no other components remain, and keep the registry backup/restore point in case rollback is needed.

I don't see any signs of My Way in your log, so do this; go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and remove any of the following found, and then let us know which one(s) in your next post:

Close any open windows, other then hijackthis, before hitting Fix checked.

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete d3mj.dll

Reboot, close any open browser windows, scan with hijackthis, post a new log, and let us know what you found regarding My Way...

My Way Search Assistant is installed by Dell, that's how the dang thing got in there ;)

But just because Dell installed it, that doesn't mean you want it or should have it. Like I said before, your log doesn't show any of the usual signs associated with it, maybe you just got an incomplete or corrupted uninstall.

Anyway, if you go to the following locations and delete the highlighted folders, it should be gone:

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
C:\Program Files\FunWebProducts

However, as a note, I could not find the C:\WINDOWS\system32 file d3mj.dll. It was not on the list at all. My Way Search Assistant is still present on my Control Panel, as follows:

Thank you so much for your reply and all of your help. My husband had downloaded the about:blank trojan, and I was able, I thought, to get rid of it with CWShredder, but that My Way Search Assistant thing still remained. And now I know why! :) Thanks again! :cheesy:

For anyone else's future reference...

Removing Dell's My Way Search Assistant:
- Find the file C:\Windows\Installer\62e8.msi
- Right Click
- Choose "Uninstall"

Make sure it's the "My Way.com" file by first right clicking, going to Properties, and checking the Summary tab
