I can load google through http://66.102.7.147 on my browser (either firefox or IE), and I can Ping it, however I can neither load nor Ping www.google.com.

I saw advice to another user on the forum and ran "netsh winsock reset", but this did not help.

A system restore shouldnt be the first solution to this, lets try a few things first.

This seems like a HOSTS file infection - I would go to this site, and replace your current HOSTS file with this modified one. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

ALSO - to FIX in HJT...

I also want to recommend removing ewido security suite, there are better security suites. I would also uninstall McAfee off your computer, since that one you have is an older version. I want to recommend getting a mcafee virus scan + firewall plus suite; alternatively Sygate Firewall + AVG Virus Scan (http://free.grisoft.com).

Thank you both. It turned out that the problem was with my router. However, I did learn a lot from everyone here and really appreciated your help and suggestions (which I have followed up on!)
thanks again
