Oh, it's no problem, I understand about being busy. I hate that this is such a puzzle. I tried to do a work around and install Oracle Open Office but it wouldn't work either, it gave me several error messages pertaining to windows, one was error 183. Probably a mistake, I got the idea from the Microsoft forum. Any way here is the jusched log but for some reason I can't find the others again, anywhere! And they are not in my recycle bin. I also found a really old version of java hanging out from 2008. I think I got rid of it, not sure though.

Do I need to backup and redo the previous steps, and try to reinstall again so you will have logs? I'll check back in the morning, I'm off to see if I can view the Super Moon, we're doing a research paper and my son wants to see if he can get some decent photos...

Oh, it's no problem, I understand about being busy. I hate that this is such a puzzle.

-- Super Moon was neat. Hope you guys got a good view.

I am not certain how best to proceed. If I had the compy in front of me, I'm sure I'd be riffing and trying all manner of things the moment they hit my brain - the "throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks" method, I guess.

I don't know if trying it again would produce a useable log - I suppose we could try a command line install that specifies log output, but I think we tried that before...
The error messages are a bit vague (as they usually are). I think what is throwing me is that the installation problem only affects latest JRE. That would seem to rule out MSI issues - or maybe I am wrong. LOL! Arrrggh!

-- Would you like to try the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility?
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

See if it finds any Java-related items to remove.

I do not believe Microsoft supports this anymore due to its volatile nature - has been known to occasionally damage some programs. I've never had this happen when I've recommended its use, but everything has a first time.....
Strictly up to you if you want to give it a go.

-- I am wondering if Oracle has any sort of support forum for this?

Anyhoo, I'll try to check back as soon as I can - This is my busiest time of the year as far as free time goes.

PP:)

Oh, sorry I missed this earlier. I was thinking if we couldn't find a way to make it work, I would do a new backup on the external hard drive and wipe it if I need to. So we could try this first. I am having a great deal of difficulty finding any kind of an answer or support. Java does a hire-an-expert support kind of thing, pay a specialist online and let them take over your computer virtually. My daughter can do this on the mac, but unfortunately for me she doesn't know windows :(

HA!
I'm not sure that if you took your machine to Microsoft that they could tell you what the problem is..... :)

Or worse, we are probably overlooking something so simple that they'd laugh us out the door.

-- Did you download Process Explorer that I mentioned earlier? I'm curious about something:
Try running process explorer in an open window while you attempt the Java install. The installer should pop up in the running processes (msiec.exe - if I recall).
See how long it runs before it terminates. When it terminates, it should flash red and disappear.

Try it a few times - when msiec appears, highlight it in process explorer and RightClick it and select "Launch Depends" which will launch Dependency Walker - see if there are any obvious errors highlighted in red and let me know.

Let me look around to see if I can find an easier way to monitor the installation attempt - the msi errors are a bit hard to track down.

PP:)

okay, I tried this about a dozen times. It didn't flash, it just went red then disappeared. It only came up with the msiec.exe when I reinstalled the older version; the new ones only came up with the java file and ran maybe 20 seconds then disappeared. Right clicking did not give me the launch depends option, in fact I couldn't find it anywhere. Maybe I am doing something wrong. I now have an msi text file, I zipped and saved it in case you want to see it. I tried to update the older version that I just installed again from the program I was trying to use it in to see if that might work now. When I ran a test on it the test said that java was not enabled in my browser, however the settings say that it that is. I tried it in Opera as well as firefox, same thing, I didn't try IE again because I'd tried it before we started all this. Leave it to me to have the most un-fixable problem ever :( It's not boring, it's just redundant and frustrating.

So, I updated to the newest version of firefox today and java is now updated and working. So weird right? Why wouldn't it work in any other browser if it was a firefox issue? I always update firefox when it tells me to... Wow, :o maybe it won't stop again! fingers crossed

Have been watching this thread with great interest and glad it is working but I have a question, what version of Firefox do you now have?
Go up to Help, About Mozilla Firefox to see for sure. I am just curious.

4.0 It seems faster. I am not loving the tabs; it's done like Opera, not my favorite, but hey, java works. I am however, back to having to turn off Comodo to load my lecture from elluminate then turn it back on after it's loaded. Otherwise java gives me an error. I can't figure out how to make it allow me to use it without having to do so. :-/

I have not yet installed Firefox 4 but here is a "tweaking" link that several people I know have used.

How to Make a Firefox 3 Theme for Firefox 4

Wow - that's bizarre....

But, hey, I'm not going to question it! :) Just take it and mutter a quick thank you to the computer gods and go about my business!

Honestly speaking, experimenting with different browsers' online install was way down on my list of things to try from the beginning.
And, the fact that other versions installed with no problem really threw me for a loop.

-- I still doubt it's a Firefox "issue" - otherwise there'd be a lot of other documented instances. Could be something on your compy interacting with Firefox in a weird way...... But, there I go questioning the computer gods. I'll shut up now :)

Oh I don't think it's a Firefox issue either PP. Honestly...think it "may" all go back to that Elluminate and how it is interacting with "whatever" in some way. It of course requires Java to operate and looking at their help site there are several things I see...
One being exactly what you did, try different browsers and if it works in a different browser then use only that browser.

If you have problems on one computer that is in a network then try exactly the same steps on a different computer in the same network, if you can replicate the problem on that computer then the problem is with the network, not the computer and not Java.

You must also configure the Firewall to Elluminate program AND Java Web Start, so make sure they both are allowed in Comodo, but then it also says, as I said above, if that doesn't work then you will have to turn off the firewall all together to get them both to work.

Very strange indeed!

I had tried the elluminate help site and did a request for help. My son thought it had something to do with elluminate too.

How do I do this? I obviously didn't do it right for the java. I can follow directions if you can direct me to them. :)

The problem with the video driver is that the screen just goes black, everything stops for a minute and then it comes back up with a message saying there was a problem with the video driver. When I go into problem reports and solutions from the control panel it says the following.

I saved a copy of the sysdata.xml file in case it might help. It's happened 3 times this month. A few months ago I was having some blue screen issues, but I removed an update that was apparently causing the issue and that hasn't come back. I'm sure one has nothing to do with the other. But just in case I'm mentioning it. I tried updating the video driver but it says it's up to date and working properly. Window didn't have a solution and I sent it in the first time it happened, so...:-/

I don't use, and have never used the Comodo Firewall so I can't give directions for that since I don't know it at all. I use the built in Windows firewall.
If you have the Java working in Firefox then you have done it right. The elluminate website said, use the browser that it works in and not the others, so...that tells me they probably don't know either and they don't want to find out how to tell people to configure each browser. I can't say that for certain that is just my opinion.

Now as far as the Video Driver, you probably need to update it, but you need to know exactly what brand of video card you have on your computer because you need the driver made specifically for that card, another one for another brand wouldn't work or could cause problems.

The Windows, "check for new driver" is always going to say the most current driver is on there, if that is what you did, you have to check the manufacturer of the card to get the right one.

Right Click My Computer, Choose Properties. When that opens go to the Device Manager and look for the Display Adapter. click on that to open and then double click to see what driver is on there.
Then you should go to the display adapters manufacturers page and look for a more recent driver. Download it and then install it and see if you have any more problems.
Judy

It says I have the latest version.

It says I have the latest version.

What says that? Who is the manufacturer of your display card? What driver version do you have? When was it installed?

Sorry, Intel Corporation, Mobile Intel (R) 945 Express Chipset Family, I went on their website, looked it up in downloads and the latest one(I think) was 7.14.10.1504, installed on 6/18/2008. I may be looking at the wrong thing but that's how it appeared to me. I tried to run the plugin that checked it for you but it said I needed Java, LOL
It's a little confusing to me so I may be looking at the wrong thing. I looked at the Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Windows Vista. There are newer ones but I think they are for Windows 7. This computer is an old man in computer years :)

I thought your Java was working in Firefox

Is this a laptop?
The latest one I see on there is one dated 7/3/2008 and is driver number 15.8.3.1504 and it's for Vista 32bit Laptop
don't know that is the correct one for you though.

Is this a laptop?

yes, a Sony VAIO

Java worked all day, it just said I needed it when I tried to use the plugin on the intel site. I'm about to try it again and see if elluminate will open up.

If you are using IE you need the plugin, if you are using Firefox you shouldn't need it.

Do this, download this free computer audit and run it. It will give you, in the browser window a complete audit of your PC. It will tell you what your graphics card is and driver installed and when.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

yep, it's still working, I don't know why it did that, but it wanted to install the latest version of java and wouldn't run

Here is the Java test page, click the download button, it will run the test and tell you if you need a different version. Current version is update 6 version 24

This is the driver download page I was viewing

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Internet+Devices&ProductLine=Netbooks&ProductProduct=Mobile+Intel%C2%AE+945GM+Express+Chipset+Family

Are you connected directly to the internet or wirelessly via a router? If using a router, can you disconnect that and connect the internet cable directly to the laptop?

Ok, the Belarc download said I didn't have admin priv. and wouldn't install, I'm in the admin. login and did a run as admin. Java says it isn't working according to the java check page and it won't install but my computer says I have the latest version when I do to the control panel and select Java, which was gone before, but is there now. The driver update says that it is not verified for my computer and won't install. If there is a way for something to not work or have and error, it will happen on my computer ;)

I hate to say this but there appears to be a lot more going on there than you actually know. There is something blocking all of these things. For one thing you should easily be able to right click that Belarc and run as administrator.

OR in Internet Explorer you should, when you click that Download button get the option to Run, and it should install and run.

Sorry, I missed one of your posts, wireless, no I can't connect to the main line at least no at the moment, I can't get to it. Well, arghhhhhhhhh, any idea what would cause that?

I have to give it up for tonight, my grandson is three and he gets up very early :) thanks for your time and patience tonight. I'll check back in the morning and if there is anything I can do, I'll do it then. Sorry to bail.

I just wondered if maybe the router firewall was blocking. You DO have the Windows Firewall turned off don't you?
I have searched around and have found a lot of posts concerning the Comodo Internet Security causing problems with java installs, and other programs also. Have no idea if this has anything to do with all of this or not but that Belarc program should run easily too. Makes no sense to me at all.

When I go to install java, I have been turning comodo completely off, then turning it back on after. I have to do the same thing when I use Elluminate. I have not been turning off the windows firewall. I was told by someone, maybe a tech from school, don't remember who or at what point, that it would not block things like that but I did wonder about both firewalls being on.

You never, ever use two firewalls at the same time on the computer. If you have a 3rd party firewall on the computer then the Windows firewall absolutely must be turned off and never turned back on, unless you Uninstall the other firewall.Same as you never have two anti-virus programs installed.
An anti-virus program can also block the install of some programs and occasionally the use of some programs.
