Need help from the pro's (can't access symantec, amazon.com, etc...)

To whomever can help.

I've been having all sorts of problems with my computer. I've been bogged by the tbps.exe and wintoolsA spyware/adware for ages and was just able to clean that up reading another forum. I have norton on my computer and it kept coming up with counter.exe as a trojan on my computer. And everytime I try to go to the site to look at information on the trojan...i can't get access. I also can't use the anti-virus update as it has to access symantec to get it. And even more bizarre, I recently have been unable to access Amazon.com. These are the only 2 sites that do not seem to be working.

I downloaded hijackthis and removed the tbps, wintools and counterb. After i did this when i try to access these sites (by typing in the url) I'm getting redirected to a google search. So, then I tried to remove everything mentioning google toolbar from hijackthis. not working. So...I'm lost, and thought I would try to get some help from people who may know how to fix this stuff. I don't know if this is worth mentioning but I can't access AIM now either. (but it could be a temporary thing)

Behavior
When Dialer.WorldContent is executed, it displays a licensing agreement. If you accept it, the program will try to dial a pay phone number.

Symptoms
The existence of the files are detected as Dialer.WorldContent.

Transmission
There have been reports that this file has been received through Web sites and email.

This dialer program does not modify any files or registry keys. It may create various icons on the desktop, and it adds a connection to dial-up networking.

To remove this dialer program, delete the icons and the main executable.

2. Close modem connections
3. Run a full system scan and delete all the files detected as Dialer.WorldContent.

To obtain the most recent definitions, start your Symantec program and run LiveUpdate.

2. To close modem connections
This risk uses available modems to create an Internet connection, sometimes without any visible signs. 3. To scan for and delete the files

1. Start your Symantec antivirus program, and then run a full system scan.

   Note: If your Symantec antivirus product reports that it cannot delete a detected file, write down the path and file name. Then use Windows Explorer to locate and delete the file.

3. Delete any icons that the dialer placed on the Windows desktop.

I'd start with this, but it sounds to me like you have more bugs than this one.

Thanks for the information. I think I may have eliminated the counter trojan. I'll have to do another scan. But I agree, I think there are definitely more bugs on my computer.

It looks to me like you have NOT ran any updates since your initial installation of Win XP.

I think I'd start there. You need to go to the Windows Update site and let Microsoft run a scan for updates. You only need to install Windows XP SP2 as it contains all fixes in previous updates. There are a lot of updates (fixes) for Internet Explorer included in SP2. One of them may fix your problem.

Thanks...I actually installed Service Pak 2 a couple times and it hosed my computer. So I was hoping to just get by without doing it. Maybe I'll give it a shot one more time.

Going all the way to SP2 is definitely not recommended on a problematic or infected system, but you should at least install SP1 and all current, relevant updates. If the updates are done correctly, the header info in your HJT log will appear as follows:
