An offering to the Internet Nasty Gurus

I humbly request assistance from the Internet Nasty gurus on a pesky little malware/adware thing that I stupidly introduced to my system by doing something I KNOW I shouldn't have done (but did anyway).

Symptoms:
1. Norton AV keeps coming up with:

and

2. I keep getting IE popups requesting to "scan" my computer. URL points to a scanner.sysprotect.com domain.

3. Norton AV also WAS popping up with some TrojanHorse alert, but I don't see it anymore.

The trojan finally revealed itself again. Here are the snapshots of the Norton AV auto-protect:

Unfortunately, I cannot use NortonAV to clean, quarantine or delete this file.

We will start with removing Purity Scan, and then run ewido and let that kill some things.

Look in your Start>Control Panels>aAdd/remove programs for PuritySCAN By OIN, OuterInfo, OIN or similar , click on it and click remove.

Reboot and delete this folder if found:
C:\Program Files\PurityScan

If not listed download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Please download and install ewido anti-spyware tool

• Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
• Click I Agree
• Click next
• Click Install
• Click Finish
• Wait Ewido will open main screen automatically.
• Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
• This in very important to get updates
• When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

• Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
• For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: HERE

  You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!

• Open Ewido
• Click on scanner top of Ewido sceen
• Click on Settings
• Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
• Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
• Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
• On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
• Under What to scan select scan every file
• Click On scan Tab
• Click on Complete system scan
• Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
• When scan has finished At bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
• Click Save report
• Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
• Click desktop
• Click Save
• Exit ewido

Reboot back to normal mode

Looking a lot better, but still have a few symptoms:

1. When I open IE (I normally use Opera, but IE is what triggers this thing) and attempt to go somewhere, I'm still getting an occasional ad popup

2. Still getting a Dialer.Trojan warning by NortonAV. It can delete one of the files associated with it, but the other is access denied. Here's a screeny (accidentally deleted the trojan screeny from a post above, so they'll both look like this one now):

Found a copy of the Nebuler trojan on my system which was replacing the garbage I just removed. Just got rid of the trojan file, and I'm running a new virus scan. After that I'll run another ewido scan and then I'll get a new HJT log. I'll keep you posted. Thank you tayspen for starting me off!

Progress! No more AV popups about the trojans. I think they're all gone. I ran another full AV scan and came up clean. I also ran an ewido quick-scan and came up clean, but I'm still infected with something. When I close an IE window I get a popup that sends me to some ad site. By the way- crunchie got me hip to the fact that there is a Vundo variant which involves sysprotect.com, and which also hides itself from HijackThis. You might want to do the VundoFix routine.

Okay, I've run a fresh full ewido scan, I ran the VundoFix.exe tool (that caught some stuff, too), and a final HJT scan. I don't see any noticible symptoms anymore (no more random IE popups so far), and things are looking pretty stable. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
* Click the Scan for Vundo button.
* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
* When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
* Turn your computer back on.

Ran a HJT to remove the one value you mentioned, and then a VundoFix. VundoFix didn't find anything, and the value from HJT is now gone. I rebooted my machine for good measure, and ran HJT again. The computer is working fine now. No odd behavior or popups anymore. Here is the latest HJT log:
