This thread documents a textbook browser hijack: a malicious DLL/BHO altered Internet Explorer settings and added persistence so the change reappeared after a simple edit. correctly pointed to the modified IE entries and recommended a dedicated CoolWebSearch remover; confirmed the tool (run with the browser closed) cleared the problem.

Why the issue sometimes “comes back”: many hijackers leave multiple persistence points (BHOs or DLLs, autorun/Run keys, hosts-file redirects, copies in alternate folders). Removing a single visible registry entry while the browser or a helper process is still running can allow the malware to re-register itself at boot. A full cleanup removes the malicious component(s) and every persistence mechanism, then restores browser defaults.

Post-clean checklist:

  • Create a System Restore point and export any affected registry branches before manual edits.
  • When manual removal is required, boot into Safe Mode and ensure browsers are not running while removers run.
  • Run two different, up-to-date anti‑malware scanners (one as a second‑opinion) to catch leftovers.
  • Inspect startup/autorun items and BHOs with a dedicated startup inspection tool; remove only entries confirmed malicious.
  • Check the hosts file and DNS settings for redirects; reset browser defaults and clear temporary files/caches.
  • Change important online passwords and monitor financial accounts for suspicious activity.

Caution: manual registry or file deletions can destabilize the system if done incorrectly; back up first. If the hijack persists after repeated, careful cleaning, a clean OS reinstall is the most reliable eradication. The sequence used in this thread—identify the BHO/DLL, remove persistence, then verify with fresh scans and hardening—remains an effective pattern.

What should i do ?

Did you have the browser closed when you fixed them???? Must be closed. If you did
Try running CWShredder. Download CWShredder from & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch. Close ALL other programs including IE before running CWShredder. Reboot after doing this & post another log please.

Hey , i had a IE window opened at the time.

All went smoothly this time and everything is fixed!

Thanks for your help!!

No worries. Glad it was an easy fix.
