hello

i've just re-installed Windows XP SP2 and i'm getting some errors i've never had before:

MSN Messenger (version 7.5) - a few seconds after start-up, it gives me

same with Opera (version 9.01). Right at the startup, same error.

Yahoo Messenger (version 8) gives me a very similar error right at the end of the instalation

Here is the HijackThis log:

Quick, practical troubleshooting for 's XP SP2 reinstall where multiple programs crash at startup (messengers, Opera) and msiexec itself errors.

First step: collect the precise error from Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and look in the Application log for the crash event. Note the "Faulting module" name and the exception code or text (for example a "side‑by‑side" or a specific DLL). That exact text is the key to a targeted fix.

Try a clean boot to rule out third‑party hooks. Disable all non‑Microsoft services and startup items with msconfig, reboot, then run the affected programs. Security hooks from firewalls/AV (ZoneAlarm, NOD32, etc.) or browser/helpers can break installers or inject into many processes; testing with them disabled quickly narrows that down.

Repair core components next. Re‑register the Windows Installer and run the system file checker from an elevated command prompt:

msiexec /unregister
msiexec /regserver
sfc /scannow

(Note: SFC may request the XP CD. Ensure the Windows Installer service is not disabled in services.msc.)

If Event Viewer mentions a VC runtime, side‑by‑side, or a specific msvcr*.dll, reinstall or repair the appropriate Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable(s). After repairing runtimes and installer components, remove and reinstall one affected application at a time.

If malware is suspected, run a second‑opinion scanner (offline or safe mode preferred) because infections can hook common executables. Keep backups and a restore point before registry or service changes. For follow‑up diagnosis, the exact Event Viewer faulting module and exception code (copied verbatim) plus an updated HijackThis-style listing will pinpoint the next step.

update:

now MSIEXEC.EXE gives me errors too, even though i upgraded Windows Installer to 3.1. Here's the screenshot.

here's an updated HijackThis log:
