Problems with favourites in IE

Have just been on 'IE' message board, and have been told to come here.

System: Windows ME

When opening up Favourites, I keep getting websites added to my Favourites. Despite deleting them, they keep re-appearing whenever I re start my computer.
Have tried Addaware, and deleted the objects it highlighted, but the websites keep returning to my favourites.

Try the following & after running it, clear out any unwanted stuff from your favourites folder. If it persists download hijackthis.

Download CWShredder from here & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch in it's database. Close ALL windows, including IE, before running CWShredder.

Download HijackThis from here & unzip it into it's own, permanent folder, (not a temporary folder & not on the desktop). Start HJT & press the scan button. When the scan is finished the scan button will change to save. Save the log to a text file, copy the entire contents of the text file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is harmless & even necessary to the running of your system.

Ok, you have hijackthis running out of a temporary folder. You must put it into it's own permanent folder B4 fixing anything.
Click My Computer, then C:\
In the menu bar, File->New->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.websearch.com/ie.aspx?tb_id=%tb_id
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TB_setup] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\TB_SETUP.EXE /dcheck

I don't know what this is, if you don't either, then fix it too.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SfAlpha2.exe] C:\GAMES\SF2\SFALPH~1.EXE /r

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/248f9ea9623021...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & navigate to & delete

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP< entire contents of this folder (make sure you have moved hijackthis, because that is currently in there too!!)

C:\GAMES\SF2< folder noting my above observation.

Reboot normally after doing the above then post a fresh log plz.

Cannot see anything else in that log. Try emptying the temporary internet files + offline files, also your IE history & check the favourites for nasties again.
Do a google for a program called ie-spyad & download it. It protects from redirects.
What are the names of the sites that are coming up? Copy & paste it/them here plz.

Just as a precaution Can you download the following app & run it, making sure to have one internet exploder window open. Save the log & paste the results back here.

You might want to edit that post & replace certain letters with **.
Did you clean out what I said? I'm about to lose my connection here & it's 1 am, so hopefully someone else here can pick this up in the meantime.

Try spybot too.

Download & instal Spybot S&D from here Update it B4 scanning. Go into settings & have it check for Beta releases also & download if available.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

Can you download a registry cleaner & run it & see if it clears any rubbish out. I think that something must be in the registry adding this stuff to your favourites.

Do you have Winamp player installed on your computer??

Go here for an on-line scan & set it to autoclean for you.

Try this for me can you. Start Winamp & scan with HJT & post the log here. What were the results of the online scan? It's one in the morning here so I will be off to bed shortly if you can get that done. Sweet.

for some reason HiJack this has stopped working on my computer!

didn't do an online scan, as when i started it, my computer went very slow and didn't do anything!!

i ran a scan with McAfee and it did not come up with anything.

Make sure the Macafee definitions are up to date & rescan. Try hijackthis in safe mode.

MacAfee is up to date as far as I am aware. It is meant to update every day when i turn my PC on.

HiJack still isn't working. Should I un-install it and then re-install and try again?

Try running updated adaware & spybot again, then run HJT. Otherwise, try it in safe mode.

Ran Adaware and it came up with 7 files.

E.g.

In Spybot there was one item called DSO Exploit

As for HJT, still no luck. Its knackered!

Try something else with HJT. Create a folder in a different location to where HJT is now. Unzip hijackthis into that folder (so use the latest download) & run it from there. You may be able to pull a swifty on it :) . Check the link in my Sig for security settings.

Nothing there. There must be something in your registry that is creating these, but I am at a loss to know what???? The only thing I can suggest at the moment is delete the nasties from the favourites folder & then make the folder *read only* to prevent anything being added in future, even by you, unless you set it back. Not a good solution I know, but the only one I can come up with until the cause of the problem is removed.
Right click on folder & go to properties & you should have the option there to change it to read only. Sorry it's a poor fix, but the best I can do.

A few messages ago you asked me to delete 04 - Startup: TuneUp.hta

Well I did it yesterday, and I have turned my computer on this morning and they have gone.
