For about a week now I've been getting the error message: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." It's driving me up a wall. I usually get it upon startup, but it has been known to appear in the middle of the day. I've browsed tech forums for two days now and have seen multiple suggestions. I scanned using BitDefender and came up clean. I downloaded the patch from Microsoft intended to fix it, but I still get the error.

When the process crashes, I lose control of my audio devices. I cannot open sndvol32, my Creative sound mixer, etc. I can open iTunes and play songs, but I have no control over the volume (other than the knob on the speakers).

I pulled some details from the error report and also have a HJT log. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!

Oh yeah, and my registry watcher was reporting that the URLSearchhook was still trying to add itself to my registry, even though I deleted its files in program files. Ideas?

~~

Besides bitdefender you could also install the following free programs

1. Lavasoft Adaware
2. AVG v7.5 Antivirus
3. PrevX

After installing, get the latest definitions and scan your machine. It might just find some spyware/malware.

_____________
Task Manager Virus

It's still giving me grief. I ran Lavasoft and PrevX. Both can't find anything on my machine. And hte Stupid process is still crashing every tiem I turn on the computer. Here's a new HJT log. Any help is greatly appreciated.

you've probably rushed off and done that reformat, but a far quicker, less disruptive task to play with first is a simple rebuiding of some system files if any are broken, using M$'s system file checker...
Grab your xp cd, and go Start > run, type:- sfc /scannow
Be prepared to hit the enter key some 100 times, but let it run to the end. And see what happens. [see that space after sfc?]
Your log had nothing bad, just a few loose ends...
