I'm working on a program designed to draw numeric summary information out of a database. The user can select four criteria via dropdown combo boxes, and the information is displayed in a string grid (TStringGrid component). A second string grid component is used to hold the highest-level division of the four criteria (department); if that was left blank in the dropdown box, then all items of that type that match the other chosen criteria (if any) are displayed. Clicking on one of these items will then begin the numeric runthrough for that item. If only one item is present (specifically chosen from the dropdown originally, or the only thing that meets all criteria), then the program starts the numeric run automatically.

For some reason, when I've got selections in the dropdown boxes, any attempt to shift the focus away from the department string grid appears to empty the dropdown combo boxes; that is, the text in them vanishes, and the item index of the boxes appears to go to zero, as runs afterwards seem to be grabbing all information for the department in question. This does not happen every time, but does happen a large portion of the time. The only connection I can make with that is that it invariably happens after the form has been maximized to fill the screen.

I attempted to modify this behavior by adding in an 'onexit' event for the department grid component. Its purpose was to reset the item indices on …

In a fair world, the natural resources would be shared, equally, as needed. Then you'd see exactly how many people had these abilities you speak of. But when the resources are tightly controlled, only a few can percolate to the top.

Please define 'shared equally'. Obviously, one or more people went to the effort of obtaining those resources; is there any reason they should have done so, unless they expect to be compensated for their efforts before any form of sharing takes place? If not, then why should they bother doing so? Especially as some resources are hazardous to obtain, and impose additional risk upon those who seek to obtain them for use?

No, just highly improbable. Remember, if it truly is random, then the patterns with meaning are just as likely to occur (1 chance in ...how many?) as the meaningless patterns.

Or, in other words, a random letter producer is just as likely to throw out joshSCH as aaaaaaa, BodoNeE, pAFdOJS, KUMQUAT, or any other set of seven randomly-cased letters: 1 chance in (52)^7. It's just that some of those combinations will have valid meanings.

From what I've seen, any discussion of any kind of scientific or pseudoscientific material on this board will nearly inevitably lead into a comparison with evolution. This is in addition to instances where the issue is brought up in terms of other beliefs, such as the depiction of Mike Huckabee given recently in the Presidential Poll thread by ZZucker.

I recognize that many people here believe in evolution. So, I would like to make a request of you. If you accept that the principles of evolution as generally taught in schools and universities now are true, would you please list the specific evidence that lead you to believe this?

Thank you,

I'm working on a program designed to be used with a set of third-party barcode scanners. These scanners had been in use for some time before I came along, so I don't think I can get the company to change them.

The scanners in question require a serial cable and Comm port in order to download their data to the system; this is done by a program included with the original setup. (Note: I am assuming this; I do not know it for a fact. I base my assumption on the grounds that the help file for the program specifically mentions three or four different types of scanner, whereas we only use the one, and because I cannot find source code anywhere on our development boxes, merely the .exe file.)

I have been asked to look into the possibility of setting it so that our program can read from a USB port, rather than the Comm ports. Given that I can't modify the third-party code, I'm trying to find a way for a USB port to emulate a Comm port. I've seen a few things since I began tracking it down online, but most of what I've looked at involves creating virtual comm port pairs; I do not feel that this is useful to me (though I could be wrong), as I do not need a pair of connected comm ports; I need a single 'fake' port backing into the USB port.

Does anyone know of a …

1) Convert as much as possible to gold or silver (one only) and attempt to set up my own currency, just to see how well it did on the markets.

2) Buy a medium-sized region somewhere and see first-hand whether or not the feudal system could work out in the modern age. Although how I'd get people to agree to join in on that...

A white can't be a terrorist? Remember the Oklahoma bombing? The Unabomber? As I understand, several of the latest batch of Muslim terrorists have been White. They recruit folks like that specifically because of that.

Are you indicating that random white guys are perhaps being bribed to serve Muslim interestes? Or are you perhaps referring to individuals such as Suliyaman Al-Lindh (I know I misspelled that), aka 'John Walker Lindh', who have chosen to throw in with them?

As for laws, Constitution gives authority for the Congress to approve treaties. We are members of the Geneva Convention and have numerous other treaties. Besides which, U.S. laws do apply to actions of U.S. citizens. Why don't you think we murder a couple of guys to get the others to talk? Are you saying we can?

It is my understanding (and if I am wrong please correct me) that the Geneva Convention only applies between those who signed it. Since I'm fairly sure that Al Quaeda isn't a signatory, I don't see that any engagement between them and the United States falls under the convention. Besides, how would you qualify them? The manner in which Al Quaeda and other 'insurgents' acts doesn't seem to fit under the 'Prisoners of War' field of GC3, but as combatants, I'm also fairly sure they don't qualify as GC4 civilians.

What gives? I thought that old McCain was a Republican? He would be old enough to be one.

1 - Age has nothing to do with political and/or ideological views. It's possible to be a young conservative or an old liberal. At least one old saying I've seen indicates it's not wise, but that's a different story.

I'm not going to get the quote perfectly, but it runs something like this: "Anyone under the age of thirty who isn't a liberal has no heart. Anyone over thirty who isn't a conservative has no brain."

I guess I'm heartless; I haven't yet obtained my third decade of life and I am a proud conservative.

2 - McCain is running as a Republican candidate, but his history in office, especially recently, indicates he's of a more 'liberal' mindset, and 'liberal'ism tends to be associated with the Democrats. And for the record, the quotes are because the stuff that proudly parades around under the name 'liberal' today would seem to be a disgrace to the classical definition of the term...at least as far as I understand the two.

McCain is just too blasted old to be President, if elected the chances are very good that he won't live his 4-year term. He should be in a nursing home with lots of pretty nurses not in the WH.

Please forgive me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression you were yourself rather rich in years, AD. Is this not …

Libel is written, slander is spoken. But I'm more inclined to treat a forum discussion as a spoken exchange, thus slander is the correct term in my opinion.

According to wikipedia, the difference is in how long the statement persists. Slander doesn't last very long in 'published' form, libel does. I'd presume anything logged on the web to qualify as libel.

According to the stereotype, Lawyers:

c) are generally not seen as benefiting their fellow man in the same way that, say, a doctor does.

I can't say for certain in the here and now. However, I would submit that, in all likelihood, the politics of a party in the 'now' are defined as a progression of their politics in the 'then'. And while Orwell's writings were, as I recall, mostly aimed at British liberalism/socialism, and Stalinist socialism thereby, I submit that there is no longer any great difference between the British version then and the current American version. You are, of course, quite free to claim I am wrong; and if you believe I am wrong then I find it unlikely you would choose to say otherwise. I still stand by what I have observed. Perhaps I am not the most observant of men; still, I cannot claim I have seen anything other than what my own eyes have viewed, nor to have heard anything other than what my own ears have caught.
