>I don't mind playing a few practice games

OK. If you are good then I would like to practice against you. jocamps is really good and unless i beat you and you beat him I am going to meet him again.

But we would just have to agree when a game is going to be practice and when the real game is going to start.

BTW. The times you are giving me are confusing me. i have always been under the impression that -5 is west of greenwhich? you say evening but at your place it should now be morning? Or do you surf the net before going to work!

consider the following c++ code. It contains a function called square wich can be called hundreds of times without the programmer having to code it one hundred times. main calls it only once but main could have called it as often as it wished.

int square( int )

int main()
{
int number;
cin >> number;

cout << square( number ) << endl;

return 0;
}

int square ( int n )
{
return n * n;
}

i would like to know the C# counterpart of that. But i would be calling the square function from a command button on a form. In Visual Basic you can add a new module which can be either a function( i.e. return values ) or a procedure ( not return values ). Then when you click a button in VB you say ...Call procedure... in the event procedure of the button or if you want the output from a function you just assign the function to variable also somewhere in code. How do I do the equivalent in C#?

Thank you very much for your help.

How about a game of math and logic puzzles. Ask a logical or mathematical question and if no one can answer within a certain amount of time the asker gives and explain the answer.

I shal go first. This is an older puzzle so some might have heard it before.

A scout infiltrate an enemy camp in order to count the number of cannon balls the enemy has. The enemy has been very helpful and has stacked the balls in a piramid with a square base. each layer of the piramid is of course smaller in square surface as the piramid gets higher until the last layer is only one ball big.

As he watch an enemy soldier aproaches and bring one more ball. Since there is no space for the last ball in this piramid the enemy troops break down the old piramid and build a new one which has a triangular base. In this new piramid the is one spot left on top of the piramid so that the last ball fits exactly.

Before the scout can count however they cover the piramid with a sail and post gaurds. How did the scout compute the number of balls without going near the gaurds.

@ Narue

I don't know when you would like to play. Post a rough time frame and we shall decide.

Originally I wanted time to prepare for you but there is only one guy in my town whom are any competition and he works late. No. Its a small town. I am not that good.

So post times for when it will be convenient for you. If you post after 19:00 GMT I shall only be able to respond on Monday so I suppose this weekend is out. Well at least I shall get this guy for practise all weekend [ :-) ] and be ready for you!

is there any way that one can place code in C# in a procedure or a function? I have code logic which is going to be executed many times over and instead of recoding it twenty times over I want to put them in functions and procedures so that I can just invoke them all the time. The help file only refers to procedures and functions in server 200 or later. is there not someting in c# itself?

Haha.. Me and sk8 said something to Nichito about that :p

Perhaps she is logical; however, one must be quick witted in the game of chess.. Smarts, logic, luck.. all play a good part.

I've gotten better since I played you btw :p What do you think my weakness was? Narue said it was unorganization and randomness.. I tweaked my opening a bit.. and studied up on some strategy.. Hopefully I will offer Jbennet/Serunson a good match :)

i would say opening principles. move two or three pawns only and aim them at the centre. try to control the centre. develop all of your pieces. in fact the two most important things in the opening is develop your pieces as quickly as possible and do not give away any free material. castle and move the rook onto the centre file so that it can support pieces in the centre.

and i dont know if you have merely overlooked the attacks on your pawns but stop giving them away freely. at the highest level just one of them is the difference between victory and defeat.

another important thing is to always protect your pieces. even if they are not under attack you must protect them.

and if your enemy does attack i have been thought that to begin a defense after the attack had been started is often too late.

sorry that i did not report last night. my connection broke of just as the game was over.

I had beaten jocamps but the outcome of the game was not a true reflection of his skill. jocamps is really good. i am willing to bet good money that he is going to win his next game.

next time that that i play him it might be different. narue no longer is the only one i have to prepare for. depending on whether narue or i goes to the loser bracket and what happens there with jocamps there is every chance that i may face him again.

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

> unless jocamps or myself stop narue she has a sixty percent chance of winning the tournament.
Unless you stop someone, they have an 100% chance of winning. ;-)

@ s.o.s
well i was actually refering to the fact that if she beats myself or jocamps then there are others to stopher as well.

no offense but after all that i have read it would seems that narue has had very little competition.

@ josh.
its not only her victories. she has been replying to a couple of my questions in the c++ thread. her writting is always logical and she presents her thoughts in a precise manner. A famous writer in my country once said that if someone tells a story he reveals as much about himself as the story he tells. Correct logic and ordered thought is a deadlycombination in chess even in a beginner. And when narue pointed out that one must develop pieces in the opening she proved that she is much more than a beginner. for example. when i played nichito he started an attack with his queen on his second move. not a good thing to do in chess.

I am using the system.diagnostics.process command to run a program. the program receives a number of parameters.

can someone please tell me if the process command of c# can receive more than one argument? and how do you specify them?

when one runs this command from the command-line you seperate the arguments by a space and two dashes.
e.g. example.exe --cpulist --loginname=Admin --loginpassword=true

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

i am betting that narue will be in the final. after everything that i have seen on daniweb so far i have to say that she appears to be the best of us playing.

but i honestly dont know how either jocamps or myself compares with her. or even how jocamps and i compare with each other. narue once gave a good piece of opening advice but that is advice which i also know.

i would say that unless jocamps or myself stop narue she has a sixty percent chance of winning the tournament.

Hmm.. I just thought of something.. how are we going to count the championship game? There will be one person who would have gone undefeated in the winner's bracket.. and one other who had only lost one game. What if the person from the loser's bracket wins? Does he win the whole tournament? Or do we have one final game since they would have both lost one game.. I have seen double elimination tournaments work both ways.

i think one last game would be best. can i suggest that next time we make it all play all and the highest score wins? We are going to have problems with draws now. By the way josch i am here now but lets begin in 45 minutes as planned OK?

i once tried to disprove astrology but in order to do it properly i also investigated it properly. i was really shocked to discover that it is not as close to BS as i had expected. i believe in science, engineering and logic but logic does include induction so....

so @ narue. really. and after the rap you gave me for expecting you to asume? you are almost forcing me to re-adjust my evaluation of your mind. carl sagan once tried to disprove astrology without ever learning what astrology entails. he only ended up showing his mind is as one-tracked as those who advocate religious dogma.

@ most others.
astrology is wrong when you look at your monthly or weekly horoscope. but that is because it is written by what i call chanchers. even real astrologers would rejoice if they could be eliminated.

i myself dont know whether to believe in it or not. all i am saying is if you get a real astrologer to do your nativity chart( dont go for astrology software or people who dont know much. the astrology industry is not regulated.) you might be at least a bit rattled. i checked out my own after learning the basics and i know that i was shocked. but my chart is very easy to do so please dont anyone ask me to do his.

firstly @ sk8ndestroy. i know what your first amendment says. About freedom of speech as well as the right to gather in marches. I have read both it and your declaration of independence many times over and that is one reason why I admire your country. the declaration of independence is especially profound. I was just afraid that josch would resort to the religious part of the first amendment to counter what i said about how welcome he and paris is in the USA.

Secondly I probably should not have told josch to not resort to it since USA is not my country. I had little right to do that but sometimes my tongue is quicker than my restrain. If any americans took offense than I apologise. But I really do not think that josch has the right to say who can be american and who can be not.

@ josch. and enderx as well. that is exactly what i meant when i said we should be gratefull. but i was also a bit sarcastic. I for one would not mind being cursed like that.

@sk8ndestroy14
I think what i meant about strong bones and the weight of riches is that it takes strength of character not to let your riches go to your head. I admit that paris failed the test completely. but why not give her the benefit of the doubt until she proves that she really did read her speech of a cue …

quintoncoert 131 Posting Whiz in Training

................What?

i was afraid that josch might refer me to the first amendment but it merely says that congress will make no law respecting an establishment of religion. The point is some people would point me to that amendment but the amendment does not say that religious conviction (in this case paris hilton's) carries no weight. It merely says that the state neither supports nor prohibits it.

@josch
if you would be so kind as to point out the idiocity explicitly. and why do you hate paris so much anyway? it seems almost pathological? what has she ever done to you or anyone else for that matter? Her only fault was being born a rich man's daughter. That kind of curse could have befallen any one of us. only strong bones can support the weight of riches. We should be gratefull that it was not one of us.

I have both smartwin and devc++ on my computer. I am trying to develop a graphical user interface but when i try to import the smartwin.h file it fails. This is because the dev c++ can not see it. It says no such file or directory.

The devC++ standard library files are in C:\Dev-Cpp\lib and the header files in C:\DevC++\include. On the other hand the smartwin header files are in c:\SmartWin\smartwin\include and SmartWin\smartwin\include\smartwin. How do I tell devC++ where to find the smartwin header files and libraries? In VC++ 2005 one sets them under linker and c\c++. is there a devc++ equivalent and where do i find it?

Also. What exactly is smartwin? Is it only a library for making GUIs or is it actually a compiler and an IDE? Can I develop with it and if so how do I specify the location of dll and header files?

Lastly. Can I specify the location of smartwin header and lib files in VC++ 2005 and then develop win32 console apps and write code to include smartwin and develop GUIs from there?

I would really appreciate any help on this. Thanks.

>She disgusts me, and it not worthy to call herself an American.

hahahaha. i sure hope that you did not mean that. I have read a number of American documents. one of them states quite clearly that anyone who proclaims the true christian faith is welcome there. Which means that she is a tad more welcome than you since she believes in God! Lets hear from the girl herself shall we?

"I'm not the same person I was," Hilton says. "I used to act dumb. It was an act. I am 26 years old, and that act is no longer cute. It is not who I am, nor do I want to be that person for the young girls who looked up to me. I know now that I can make a difference, that I have the power to do that. I have been thinking that I want to do different things when I am out of here. I have become much more spiritual. God has given me this new chance."

come on guys. she paid her dues to society. cut her some slack will you? Is it so hard to believe that she meant it?

Or at least make it New York time so that the rest of us can compute it more easily.

Because it is a feared and much hated creature. Also it is feral.

It is about the size of a ten year old child but it has enough strength to give a dog such a hiding that it would not beable to sit for weeks. Of course when I said mythical.... Some people, me included, do not believe in Nguni magic or myths. Others however swears by it. But i have to say that all the c++ programs which i have done up until now did not have GUIs. I developed visual basic screens for them and invoked them with the shell command. So i have not studied any GUIs MFC or otherwise for c++.

I sure hope so, otherwise all of the programs that were written prior to 2000 would completely fail to work.

I am not sure that Microsoft would care. Bill Gates continuously finds ways of letting computer users pay for the same thing over and over. It seems that with dot net he has finally managed to bring computer proffesionals into the fold as well. Not letting something work is a good way of being paid for it again.
