Problem statement :

My Seagate Ext HDD fan/electrics died, & I need to recover the files on the hard drive.

HDD appears OK.

I read somewhere that I could take the HD out of the Seagate enclosure & connect it to my PC (Dell Dimension 2400) after I had removed my PCs native internal hard drive.

Then save the files from the newly installed HD to another external hard drive

My question is - when I remove my Dell internal HD & replace it with the HDD from the Seagate External enclosure, won't I have to install Windows on it to be able to see whats on it & save the files - which will wipe clean the newly installed HD I am trying to save ?

THanks Kyle - in the end, do you know what infection/virus this was?

Kyle - you're a star - I think its cracked !!

After Vundofix, icons have reappeared, & working fine so far. Can you pls just check the new logs you requested, as I still see geedb.dll there, although it says 'file missing' for this. THanks.

Kyle

I ran hijack this, ticked the ones I could see (a couple of the No Name BHOs were no longer there) & went to safe mode. In safe mode however all I get is seemingly the safemode equivalent - a black screen, with Safe Mode in white lettering in the bottom corners.

When I rerun Hijack this on normal restart, all the ones you mentioned are gone except BHO noname geedb.dll, &

O20 - Winlogon Notify: geedb - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geedb.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: qomlljk - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\qomlljk.dll

ICON.EXE doesn't appear to be there anynore, but if anything things have got worse, as I used to be able to delete ICON.EXE, logoff & log back on again to get a few minutes with the icons on the desktop - now the are not there at all.

For some reason my system restore only goes back to early May - when I click on the back arrow I cant get to April. I think all of this started when I updated new drivers for my Nvidia GEforce 2MX card, & also loaded Nhancer.

This is the worst ever. Thanks for your help New log below

I'm having terrible problems with this virus, which clears my desktop of icons & the start menu. Only way to keep working is to go to task manager, stop the icon.exe process, logoff & logon again. But it keeps coming back.

I attach Hijack this log. I also keep getting the Winantivirus popup, but that isn't 10% of how bad this ICON.exe is. I have Spybot, Spyware Doctor, Adaware, & downloaded RapidBlaster Killer, but ICON keeps coming back. Grateful for your help.

Need your help pls

I have a Dell Dimension 2400

Problem started I believe when I updated my Nvidia GE2 graphics drivers

I booted up & now have a very pixelated desktop, with no icons. I cannot get to safe mode, as on startup none of the F8, F2 or F12 buttons do anything, & it just loads the themed desktop. I cannot get to task manager either, as while I can move the mouse cursor, ctrl alt delete doesn't bring up task manager.

Periodically as I look at the pixelated red moon desert desktop screen, the mouse goes to eggtimer & I hear activity in the PC tower, but it reverts to the mouse cursor after a few seconds.

I have also tried having the XP Installation disc in at time of bootup, but while it spins, it doesn't bring up anything on my desktop, & eventually stops spinning, leaving me with my themed destop, hugely pixelated, & no icons.

The Nvidia GE2 graphics card has operated problem free for years - it is only since I updated the drivers (silly me!) using Microsoft update that I began to have problems

I would do a system restore, but I have nothing on my desktop except the desktop theme - I cannot get to the start menu, cannot see any icons, cannot get to task manager either. Mouse moves around, but cannot click on anything, as theres nothing there.

Grateful …
