camelNotation, check out these sites for downloading a distro:
http://linuxiso.org/
http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=cd

The second site has a bunch of cd or live distros to download. I use both knoppix and slack-live when I am at school and work. Knoppix will fit on 1 cd, and slack-live is even smaller.

These sites should help you get started:
http://frf.hypermart.net/linux-newbie/index.htm
http://dsl.org/cookbook/

Of course if you have a specific question, come back here for some help. There are alot of linux distros and only you will know what is the best. You might have to try a few of them to find the one that you like.

"Nolan testified that she was putting ketchup on her cheeseburger when she accidentally struck Jenkins."

I thought she wanted mayo, people just can't make up their minds nowadays.

Anyways, I installed Linux Redhat 7.3. Redhat 8 and 9 didn't work, it just woden't boot. I also tried Mandrake 9.1, same thing. I guess older versions only work on my Gateway.

First of all, make sure you burn your cds as isos, not data cds. Second, go into your bios and make sure the first boot device is your cdrom or dvdrom drive.

Sorry if this thread is a bit dated, but maybe it will help someone else in the future.
One last thought, only you can make the final decision on what is best. For some it will be windows, and for others it will be linux. If you are more comfortable with windows, then stick with that. If you are interested in linux or bsd, then try them out, and then you can make an educated evaluation of which one will best for you.
Good luck :cheesy:

Novell (and Windows, for this case) will defeat Linux. Maybe not in a year, but it will come eventually.

Novell will defeat Linux or join it? I know this is an old post, but how times have changed.

When you go to a store (or e-store), you can go and pick up a Novell or Windows title. Get home, pop the CD in, and install it. With lots of ease, and hardly and hassle.

I bought RH7.3 in Sept. of 2002, and took it home. Installed without any problems. Was up and running in about 1 hour. That was when I did not know anything about linux besides that it was an OS.

Right now I would have to say x windows, but I am learning more about the console. The console took awhile to learn, but is now becoming more intuitive. I have an old computer without enough ram to run X, so this will be a good learning computer. Full immersion in the cli.

I have read here and in other forums about what a pain it is or takes too much time to su to root. Oh common. If that is how you want to set up your box and not learn about proper file permissions, then so be it. Like alc6379 said, we will all get a good laugh out of your blunders. :cheesy:

I have no problems with apt and synaptic on RH9. Keeps my system updated painlessly.
