It is a good question. On mine, and MANY other , PC's nowadays the on-line , real-time protection "sub-components" of AVG8/SpyBot/teaTimer/ etc combine to cause a 5 or 10 second lag when a file or folder is opened. But no-one gives decent advice. Typically they say "it's up to you".
