hello friends,
This may sound very primitive, but that's no wonder cos I am very new to this.
I would like to know how to find out the current operating system that I am using, with shell commands. For example, if I am using ubuntu and fedora , and a program that I run differs depending on the operating system. So to determine which one out of those two what should I type in the shell?

Try uname -o
