display progress while page loads

Hi,

I have a page that loads for some time and it would be nice to show some progress. I want it to show messages like "loading..." and "x amount of something loaded so far" during the process, however, it only appears in the end. I have disabled the output buffer, but still nothing. Is there any way to show content while page loads? A good example is wordpress wp-admin plugin installer, where it nicely shows the progress of a plugin being installed.

Also, there is a possibility to turn it into an ajax load request, but i will still need some info about how many bytes have loaded so far, etc. Any suggestions welcomed.
