Hello everybody. My internet speed is quite decent. I don't use much of it when I am using the computer. But one thing that really irritates me is how little bandwidth I get when my siblings are using it too. I usually play MMO games like World of Tanks and MW3 and those 2 games shouldn't take up a ton of the bandwidth. But, whenever my siblings are streaming netflix or playing online browser games, the ping on the games I am playing just goes wacko. It goes really high for a few seconds and then back to really low …

Hi, folks I'd like to start by telling you I have been out of IT completely for a number of years, with the exception of removing viruses from my kids computers and paper jams from my wife's printer. My last Linux build was Slackware 5. In short, I don't mind getting my hands dirty, but my knowledge is extremely dated. I have four pre-teen/teen kids, who are costing me 150 GB/month in videos and online gaming. I want to know if it is possible to: 1. Assign devices to a user name 2. Assign volume caps to the user name …

I posted this over on CGTalk and was also redirected here to ask about the following which, if you'll excuse my lazyness, is a bit of a copy/paste: This is a call for advice on switch traffic theory for a small-sized (~13 artists) VFX studio. For the most part, we do fine, but we have a couple (read, one big) problems that cause bandwidth choking for us, and I'd love to get some ideas from you guys about how your studios run and what has and hasn't worked for you guys in the past. Here's the setup for us: * …

Hi Guys, As the title says really... Sounds simple, it is. But....! I'm dealing with huge numbers here. I'm dragging bandwidth from a logging system I am developing for a client and it returns it in BYTES... Very accurate :| This is the sort of number I'm dealing with here...
$str = 1.797693134862316e+308; $float = settype($str, "integer"); $bandwidthusage = intval($float) / 1048576; echo $bandwidthusage;
The above code returns: 9.53674316406E-7 How do I convert this to MB?! It's driving me nuts. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance, Josh

Pretty much anywhere you live, it would appear that the iPhone consumes at least 50% of all mobile data traffic. Whereas the Android has a little catching up to do with just 11% of that mobile data bandwidth consumption. Of course, the iPhone entered the restaurant first and is already on pudding while Android devices are still nibbling at the starters so to speak. Still, that's more than RIM (BlackBerry) on 7% and eclipses Windows Mobile phones which consume just 3%. Only Symbian devices are seriously in the bandwidth consumption fight on 25% (a drop of 4% from the previous …

While most reporters and bloggers today are trumpeting the fine showing by chip-maker AMD in the semi-annual list of the world's [Top 500 Supercompting Sites](http://www.top500.org/list/2009/11/100), for me the real news is what AMD has planned for next year. In the first quarter of 2010, AMD is scheduled to begin shipping a processor that will include not only 12 cores, but also the vastly expanded memory bandwidth to support them. Code-named Magny-Cours, the processors will offer four channels for DDR3 memory, twice that of its 6-core Opteron top-performer, which by the way powers what is today considered [the fastest supercomputer in …
