If the fan wire is disconnected, connect it. As far as removing the fan+heatsink, go ahead. A tiny tube of the special heat resisting gunk for the processor is only a few dollars. However it is only happy with one of the 3 ribbon cords which connect the hard drives. The problem may have been a small power supply wire that seemed pinched behind the optical drive cradle?
