I have the "SpyGuard" virus and am trying to use SmitFraudFix to clean my computer. It won't allow me to start in Safe Mode (the drivers load and the last one loaded is MUP.SYS then it kicks back to a reboot with typical options for safe or normal). I have to boot normally to get in. I have also tried to modify my msconfig file for safeboot, but that put me in an endless cycle that I can't get out of.

Have you tried system restore?
I'd consider a repair install also.
Love that Smitfraud fix-it worked wonders on a friend's PC.
