A clear, small checklist and two simple workflows to make a Softpedia-style badge without needing advanced skills. wants an easy/free route; is right that a normal image editor can do it, but a template or vector approach is faster for non‑designers.

Quick decisions

  • If you want one-click ease, use a template-based web editor (drag/drop badges, icons, text).
  • If you want crisp scaling and small files, build the badge as vector (SVG) and export to PNG for browsers that need raster.

Build-it-yourself (vector) workflow — good for clean, scalable badges

  1. Create a rounded rectangle or circle as the base.
  2. Apply a subtle linear gradient for the 3D feel.
  3. Add a glossy highlight: duplicate an oval, set to white with low opacity and mask/clip it to the top portion.
  4. Add a thin outer stroke and a faint drop shadow for depth.
  5. Place a compact icon or short text; vertically center and keep contrast high.
  6. Export as SVG for website use; also export PNG at 2× size for retina displays.

Template/quick workflow — fastest for non‑designers

  • Pick a badge template, swap colors, add your icon/text, download PNG with transparency.
  • Keep text very short (one or two words) so it remains legible at small sizes.

Export and optimization

  • Use SVG when possible; use PNG-24 if you need complex translucency.
  • Design at double the target pixel size (2×) for sharpness on high‑DPI screens.
  • Compress exported PNGs before upload to reduce page weight.

Cautions

  • Do not copy another site’s trademarked badge exactly; either use official partner badges (if provided) or create an original design.
  • For free vector and raster tools, consider Inkscape and GIMP if a downloadable editor is preferred.
