As noted, a Windows 98 install that fails with a VxD error after the first reboot is a classic symptom when the installer loses access to the installation files. was right to think drivers; the usual root cause on old laptops is that the GUI phase of Win98 setup does not have the USB/CD drivers loaded, so an external USB CD drive becomes inaccessible and the setup tries to call VxDs that it cannot actually read.

Practical, proven fixes:

  • If the installer is on an external USB CD, copy the CD's i386 folder to the hard disk before the first reboot and run setup from there. Typical steps from a Windows 98 startup floppy or DOS prompt:

    md c:\i386
    xcopy d:\i386 c:\i386 /s /e
    c:\i386\setup.exe

Adjust drive letters if the CD is not D:. Bootable floppies or a working internal CD drive make this much easier.

  • Try a Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) CD if available — it has better USB support than earlier releases. Test the install CD on another machine to confirm it is not scratched or corrupt; reburn from a verified image if needed.

  • If the laptop originally shipped with Toshiba recovery media, the OEM recovery CD contains the correct VxDs/drivers for the Tecra 8100. If a recovery partition was wiped, search for official Toshiba support/recovery options or obtain replacement media from reputable sellers.

Other checks: enable legacy/USB support in BIOS, update the BIOS if an update is available, and test the hard drive/RAM for errors. If the exact VxD error text (file name or fault message) is recorded, that string points directly to the missing driver or component and helps narrow the repair path.

Sounds like a driver problem ?? have you got all the drivers of your hardware installed ??

hi

the problem is actually happening before i could install the hardware drivers..

When the first installation is up in windows 98 and the system reboots for finding the hardware configuration, the error comes up before that.. so i wonder that it cant be the error.. any other ways to do it.. let me know whether there is any specialied software cd's or os for the laptops which i can download from the net and install after performing a format.
