I am trying to fix a computer belonging to someone who has suffered brain injury. This unfortunately means that he is prone to clicking on the popups that have been coming up in firefox (your computer is infected etc). The internet is a lifeline for him, and I am concerned that he is left without access at the moment.
Despite weekly adware removal, and daily antivirus checks, over xmas he got hit by a rootkit and now has no internet access. This could be down to having two teenagers that "visit" him and mess up the computer.
I ran avg anti spyware, GMER and hijack this.
The hijackthis log is below, and I include the screenshots of the avg and GMER for further information.
The machine will not connect to the internet any more, all dns settings seem fine, just no communication. Machine will ping local host but not further.

Try resetting tcp/ip and see if that makes a difference:

Click Start then Run type in cmd click OK.

In the black window type this followed by the "Enter" key:

netsh int ip reset c:\reset.txt

I would also type netstat after that...if you see crazy numbers showing up here there may be a larger problem. Most likely he is just not online at all and you won't see much of anything except a bunch of entries for localhost.

Either way - reboot the computer...reset all the internet equipment (router/modem/whatever)

If it's still not working you should tell us about the internet connection there. If that rootkit was used, the compromised system will never be really secure again. You may want to help your friend reload OS if possible.

ran netsh and rebooted things, netstat gives no numbers at all, the comp is at my house now, and even though i manually inputted the network details and it thinks its on the network no internet access still.
netstat /all states the TCP on local as OWNER-
:epmap :0 listening
:microsoft-ds :0 listening
:1025 :0 listening
:10110 :0 listening
:netbios-ssn :0 listening

on top of this i can not use add/remove programs on the administrator account, they don't have the remove information or buttons.

The internet connection it originally stopped working on is a cable always on, at my house its runing via a network to an adsl.

UPDATE:
It seems to work in safe mode with networking, but not in normal boot. is there a dead driver left by spyware blocking access? if so how on earth do i find it?

Had to resort to fdisk and full reinstall, after which computer works fine.
Thank you for your help, it did appear to be a residual driver blocking internet.
