I am writing this post from my bosses pc.
He seems to be recieving emails from people he doesnt know and he hasnt sent anything to.
Example of what hes getting: postmaster@"anything"."anything"
Postmaster@"anything"."anything"
Mail Delivery System
Mail Delivery Subsystem
MAILER-DAEMON@"anything"."anything"

All the postmasters have the title: Delivery Status Notification(failure)
All the Mail Delivery System have the title: Undelivered email returned to sender
All the Mail Delivery Subsystem have the title: Returned email: see transcript for details
And the MAILER-DAEMON have the title: failure notice OR various other titles

All of them have attachments except the MAILER-DAEMON.

What bothers me is that all these emails were "Returned" between 5 and 7 in the morning when no one was here.
He has gotten 37 of them since he clicked recieve in outlook this morning.

I have searched google with the emails "senders" example: Mail Delivery Subsystem
and I read that it might be a worm named: W32/Sobig.F@mm or a full email account.

He has bitdefender 2008 installed(latest updates) and it hasnt reported anything.

I have downloaded the following software to his pc : hijackthis , stinger and a symantec removal tool for W32/Sobig.F@mm

Do you think it is a worm of some sort or something else?
I would like an oppinion or help before I run any of the software
Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.Once the files are downloaded click on Next
Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:Extended

Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on:Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

I ran bitdefender and it found 8 instances of adware(Adware.Timesink.B, Adware.Timesink.C, Adware.Timesink.E, Adware.Timesink.G)
and 2 of Win32.Magistr.A@mm

Bit defender says it cant take any action as it is in the oulook.pst file. *See the image*
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/Impi/bitscreen.jpg
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a13/Impi/bitscreen1.jpg

All of these alerts are from the outlook file.

All the Adware.Timesink.(B,C,E,G) come from one email.*See image 1*
And the Win32.Magistr.A@mm from 2 separate emails.*See image 2*

I couldnt run kaspersky yet as our monthly bandwidth is almost up. And it will be downloading 19mb which is a little too much as our developement team needs to download an update/patch for a program they are using.(got a project to finish)
I will run kaspersky online scanner as soon as possible on monday morning.
Thank you for the reply and sorry I couldnt do the online scan yet.

Have you attempted to delete those files manually? If not, give it a go.
What is the full path to them?

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

I will download ATF cleaner and report back.
As for the path, they are in the screen shots but here they are:
The reason bit defender cant seems to delete them is because they are part of the office outlook backups that were made by outlook.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst - Adware.Timestamp.* and Win32.Magistr.A@mm

Thanks for your help so far.

Download Avenger by Swandog and unzip it to your Desktop.

Note: This program must be run from an account with Administrator priviledges.

[*]Open the Avenger folder and double click Avenger.exe to launch the programme.
[*]Copy the text in the code box below and Paste it into the Input script here: box.

Files to delete:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst
  • Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do

NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

[*]Ensure the following:

  • Scan for Rootkits is checked.
  • Automatically disable any rootkits found is Unchecked.

[*]Press the Execute key.
[*]Avenger will now process the script you've pasted (this may involve more than one re-boot), when finished it will produce a log file.
[*]Post the log back here please. (it can also be found at C:\avenger.txt)
