The behavior you describe (toolbar on every new IE window, homepage changed, unsolicited favorites/desktop shortcuts) is a classic browser-hijacker / PUP install. is right to update HijackThis first — helpers need a fresh log to give precise manual removal steps. Follow a focused cleanup sequence and post the new log if anything persists.

  1. Update HijackThis and save a fresh log (do not run while browsing).
  2. Run an up-to-date anti-adware sweep: start with Malwarebytes AdwCleaner to remove toolbars/PUPs, then run a full scan with an anti-malware product. (AdwCleaner)
  3. Use a startup inspector like Autoruns to find and disable suspicious Run/Browser Helper Object entries (look for entries pointing into Application Data or unusual names). Only disable entries you do not recognize. (Autoruns)
  4. In Internet Explorer, disable unknown toolbars/BHOs via Tools -> Manage Add-ons and reset the homepage/search provider from Internet Options. Check the hosts file at %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for redirects.
  5. Back up your Favorites and create a System Restore point before deleting files or editing the registry. If the infection resists, run scanners in Safe Mode with Networking and repeat.

If the toolbar came bundled with a downloader, also check Add/Remove Programs for recently installed items and remove them. For general removal walkthroughs and troubleshooting patterns used by responders, see the removal guides at BleepingComputer: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/

After these steps, post the new HijackThis log here (updated version), and mention which scanners cleaned files so responders can provide targeted next steps.

Hi. :) You can start off by updating Hijackthis to version 1.98.2. You can use the update feature within hijackthis or download it from here:

Also be sure to save it in a permanent folder, not in a temporary one and not on your desktop. Once you have done that scan being sure all browser windows are closed and post a new log. :)
