Hi there, im new on here so i hope im doing this right.

I have a problem with my desktop display settings, i can right click an image and set to background picture, but when i go into desktop properties all the options are unclickable like tile/centre/background etc. Having read a few posts ive run hijackthis and below is the notepad file, i had a really big spy/adware problem around 2 weeks ago which i tried a few different adware programs to fix. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Hey I have the exact same problem. Have you figured out yet how to fix it Randy

I have the same problem Only my desktop has gone black but the icons are you there And cant change anything in setting

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Download the HostsXpert.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

I tried to restore, but when i press ok to confirm i get an error message

ERROR: Cannot create file C:/windows/system32/DRIVER/ETC/hosts

I didnt want to do any of the other things mentioned without having done this 1st.

Is it ok to try the combofix without the hostsxpert used?

Yes, try the combofix first and we will take it from there.

Ok heres the combofix result

=================

Download the newest version of HiJackThis; version 2.0.2. Place it in a permanent folder before scanning. Repost your log after following the steps below. This version has features that might be more helpful in 'cleaning' up your system.

=================

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

C:\DOCUME~1\dez\LOCALS~1\Temp\PCD59X2.sys

I cannot find this on my computer, i did a search and followed the path but the file is not there, i am going to continue with the other instructions.

Let me know how things are after that.

No it is no different, what happens is you can look at a few pages, then when u click to look at your next page nothing happens, close firefox open again and sometimes it works and sometimes not.

Done all those but im afraid nothings changed, so frustrating, had to open firefox 3 times just to get this open :(

Grasping at straws now. Have you tried reinstalling FF? Can also try the following;

Download Dial-a-Fix and run it. Select the 'Check all' (green arrow) and then hit 'GO.'
Reboot when done and see how things are now.

uninstalled and downloaded new firefox and ran dial a fix but unfortunately no joy, any other ideas mate? Fingers crossed

Scan process completed.

Nothing wrong there that I can see. Do you have the same problem if you use another browser such as IE or Opera?

Scan Statistics
Total number of scanned objects 116223
Number of viruses found 1
Number of infected objects 4
Number of suspicious objects 0
Duration of the scan process 01:40:09

Says here there was a virus and 4 infected objects? IE is better than FF at the moment but it still has problems, particularly with sites like myspace

Yep. It reckons that the Smitfraud removal tool is infected. Other is in the system restore folder.
You can disable system restore if you wish, which will rid you of that file, but you will have no restore points.
You can also try restoring your pc to a time before these problems started?

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes.

How do i do a restore? Its been about 4-5 days

Go to Start | Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Select the Launch System Restore button.
The radio button for Restore my computer to an earlier time should be selected then go next.
Select a date that you wish to restore to and select next.
Select next again and your system should restore to the time you selected.

Once done, do a fresh scan with hijackthis and post the log. Let me know if the restore fixed the problem.

The hijack scan results are below, i tried a few different restore points now 2 weeks earlier when there was definitely no problems, my desktop is locked again now too :)
