Hi everyone,

I started my pc today only to find a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in it on the icon tray. My PC seems to be running well and when I try to click on the icon it disappears. It will stay in the tray for a minute or two, disappear, and then it comes back again. Do I have a Virus? I am running a spyware scan right now and it said one of the files was corrupt. Could this have something to do with it? How can I fix this? Please help!! Thank you so much! :)

For : a yellow triangle with an exclamation in the system tray is usually a notification from Windows or an installed application indicating something needs attention (examples: a security service stopped, an update failed, or a network problem). The icon vanishing when clicked is normal for transient notifications; repeated reappearance means the underlying condition is still present. Identify the source first by hovering for the tooltip, opening Notification Area/Taskbar icon settings to reveal which program posts the alert, and checking the Windows Security/Action Center or the installed security product for active messages.

Quick, practical checklist to diagnose and fix:

  • Inspect the tray tooltip and the security product UI or Windows Action Center for a clear message.
  • Check Event Viewer for recent Warning/Error entries related to security, updates, or networking.
  • Repair core Windows files from an elevated command prompt:
sfc /scannow
chkdsk C: /f /r

(see System File Checker documentation System File Checker (sfc).)

If scans find corruption or infection, back up personal data before attempting repairs. For persistent or unclear alerts, run an offline rescue scan (for example, ) or consider an in-place repair/restore.
