One Of Those Desktop Warning Viruses! Please Help :(

hello daniweb community
this is my first time actually ever using a forum so i apologise in advance if i dont make any sense or i posted the thread in the wrong place.
OK so the problem i am having at the moment is that i encountered this virus when i came across this site. I have Avast Antivirus and a whole load of warnings came up about different trojans and what no being saved to my computer. After this i exited the site and my desktop had a WARNING! sign across it telling me to download this 'spyware removal' program to clean up my computer. My taskbar was completely locked and my computer very laggy.

I got rid of about 6 files of the virus so i have got rid of the flashing WARNING! sign and the other popups, re-enabling my taskbar. The only problem that i am having now is that my desktop properties won't allow me to select desktop backgrounds (i also cant select a background from Internet Explorer either), my AVG Antispyware updates will not work and when i tried to do a system restore it was unsuccessful (i did this about three times).

I will post the hijackthis log and if anyone can offer me help it would be greatly appreciated... THANKYOU :icon_biggrin:

Test whether the problem is profile‑specific by creating a new local administrator account. If the new account can change the desktop and update normally, copy personal data to the new profile and retire the old one.
Repair system integrity: run the system file checker (sfc /scannow on XP; Windows will request media if needed) and check that critical services (theme, update and shadow copy/restore services) are enabled. If System Restore still fails, toggle System Restore off, reboot, then re-enable to force a fresh restore point set.

If any system UI elements stay locked, or important update/restore features remain corrupted, make a full backup of documents and browser data and consider a clean OS reinstall or image restore—this is faster and safer than chasing deeply buried changes. As a final precaution, reinstall/repair the AV client, update all passwords for online accounts that were used from the machine, and move to a fully patched OS/browser configuration when possible.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html) to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Download the update from here if you have problems.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here.

Can you please do the following.

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

Search for...

ALCMTR.EXE

...using "Start | Search...".

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

Reboot.
