Brief summary and next steps (adds to and posts)

Stopping the background process (wlcomm.exe) — as found — will often let Messenger sign in because wlcomm.exe is just the Windows Live Communications Platform and the crash there only signs Messenger out; that is a useful short‑term workaround but not a reliable permanent fix. (file.net)

If this recurs, follow a short, ordered checklist (backup first)

  • Verify wlcomm.exe is the real Windows Live component: in Task Manager right‑click the process → Open file location; the legitimate path is under the Windows Live install (not a temp or user profile folder). If it’s not from the Windows Live folder or not digitally signed, treat it suspiciously. (file.net)
  • Check Event Viewer (Windows Logs → Application) for the exact faulting module or ESENT/contacts.edb errors; that points the troubleshooting direction (bad DB vs. third‑party DLL). (support.microsoft.com)
  • If Event Viewer shows contacts/DBStore errors, export your contacts first (or make a copy of the Contacts DB folder), then close all Live apps and rename the DBStore folder so Windows Live will rebuild it on next start. Example (XP vs later):
REM Windows XP
rename "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\{GUID}\DBStore" DBStore.old

REM Vista/7/8/10
rename "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\{GUID}\DBStore" DBStore.old

Repair and conflict‑isolation

  • Do a clean boot to rule out injected AV/toolbars/drivers (use msconfig/Startup and hide Microsoft services). If Messenger works in a clean boot, re‑enable services half‑at‑a‑time to find the culprit. (support.microsoft.com)
  • Repair or reinstall Windows Live Essentials from Programs and Features (Repair all Windows Live programs), rather than just uninstall/reinstall a single EXE. (learn.microsoft.com)
  • Run System File Checker and consider chkdsk if disk or system corruption is suspected: sfc /scannow and chkdsk c: /f /r. (support.microsoft.com)

Notes & priorities

Because ’s suggested malware checks were already run and returned clean, the most likely causes are a corrupt contacts DB, a conflicting shell/driver/toolbar (AVG toolbars, graphics/network drivers have shown up in other cases), or system/drive errors — not malware in most reported cases. Start with Event Viewer → DBStore rebuild → clean boot → repair, then SFC/CHKDSK if needed. (learn.microsoft.com)

What is the exact FULL wording of the error message?
Have you done a clean up of temp files, emptied browser cache lately?
Try running the free program CCleaner and see if this helps.

I ran CCleaner when this problem came up... I uninstalled MSN restarted then did CCleaner again... and installed MSN again and ran CCleaner and MSN still didn't work and I have run Spybot Search and Destroy and that came up with no problems.

In doing some searches on your problem this seems to be a very common one with many suggestions given, some working and some not. Even though you have run Spybot let's try to eliminate, for sure, the possibility of malware being the cause. Please do the following:
First of all, Disable Bittorrent from running and leave it turned off until the problem is solved.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBA-M) to your Desktop.

* DoubleClick mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install MBA-M.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When MBA-M finishes, Notepad will open with the log. Please save it where you can find it easily. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt.

Reboot the computer

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

* You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

Reboot the computer

Please post back with both of those logs.

Well your logs show clean. You might want to try the steps given

That didn't help but I couldn't delete some of the registry keys because it said that what i wrote into the cmd was invalid but I did what the guide said so?

Fixed! I stopped the process wlcomm.exe in task manager then i turned msn on again and logged in and wlcomm.exe started again and no error report thing? but before i stopped the process i had the report so stopping it fixed it? thanks
