Hey guys I need some help! I got a link from my friend and it took me to some stupid site that ended up Hijacking my desktop. I already posted this once it the other thread. But I thought I'd make my own post so I could get some new feed back as my problem is not exactly the same. My desktop background was hijacked; all my icons were removed and replaced by a solid red screen with a warning box in the center. The box linked me to the Smart Security site just like the other person. But in addition to that I am unable to right click on any of my icons outside of the Star menu. This is my first problem of this kind so I could really use the help! Thanks alot!

This looks like a classic rogue-AV hijack: a full‑screen warning that hides icons and disables the Explorer context menu so the machine appears unusable. described the usual symptoms, rightly pushed automated cleaners as a first pass, and ’s note about the vendor “fix” restoring the screen is typical—these fake utilities often remove the visible symptom but leave registry and startup persistence behind. If the automated tools don’t fully restore right‑click and icons, a small, careful registry repair usually will.

If you can still open Task Manager with the keyboard (Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Task Manager -> File -> New Task (Run) -> regedit), back up the registry (File -> Export) and then check and restore these values. Importing the short .reg below will reset the common policy flags and ensure the normal shell is used. Save it as restore_desktop.reg and double‑click to import, or use Regedit -> File -> Import.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDesktop"=dword:00000000
"NoViewContextMenu"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDesktop"=dword:00000000
"NoViewContextMenu"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"Shell"="explorer.exe"

After applying, restart Explorer (Task Manager -> End Process on explorer.exe, then File -> New Task -> explorer.exe) or reboot. Then look for persistence: examine Run keys and Startup items (msconfig or an autorun viewer), Services and Scheduled Tasks, and uninstall any suspicious programs. Run one or more up‑to‑date on‑demand anti‑malware scans to remove leftover files. Always create a restore point or export the registry before edits, and if uncertain, post an updated HijackThis/autoruns log so the remaining startup items can be reviewed.

To remove trojans there is a tool which needs to be downloaded and run.

1. Please download and save it to your desktop

2. Double-click on the stinger.exe file and open the tool

3. Choose your entire hard drive to scan.

4. Choose Scan Now

5. Stinger will fix anything that it finds

6. Click the File menu and select Save report to file

7. Post the log file results here in this thread.

Reboot to SAFE mode to delete files
How to start computer in safe mode

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your , be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Do a virus scan Please do an online scan, 2 would be better,

Micro World
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

.

Download then unzip and run CWShredder to clean up clicking "FIX" to have it remove all it finds.

CWShredder available from these places :-

http://www.aluriasoftware.com/tools/cwshredder.zip
Or this as a full download without any unzipping required

We have found that some of the CWS infections can be removed better from safe mode, rather than normal mode.
To get to safe mode use the F8 key while booting the machine. Detailed instructions from :-

Then please do this since it’s better to use automated tools to get rid of the bad stuff use these 2 programs first before doing the final cleaning with HJT

First use Spybot S&D. (Version 1.3)
Spybot
Unzip, and update. Install the updates and run. Delete all that it marks in red.
Reboot

Then it’s time for Ad-Aware

Install and update by using the globe icon. Restart your computer and run Ad-Aware.
Press scan now and select drives and/or partitions to be scanned. When done select all and click next. Remove all checked items and then reboot your computer.

Please go to this page and read the instructions for how to configure Spybot S&D & Ad-Aware
