Hello all, I am looking for an introduction to the detection of port scanning, specifically which logs should I be looking at, and what for. I have googled the subject but can't find the relevant "idiots guide", if anyone knows of such a document please advise.

My suggestion is to grab a copy of wireshark and read the website facts and the manual. You can download and run it for free and it will give you a real look at what goes on with your system ports.
