Hi. I've noticed my computer slowing down the past few days, with IE pop-ups. Found this unusual as I'm currently using Firefox. Opened my IE and noticed the yupsearch.com toolbar.

Please help to advice on how to remove this?

As began, the scans and Spybot/Ad‑aware passes cleared many items but several persistence mechanisms still explain the symptoms reported: DNS/hosts tampering, locked autostart components, the repeated WMIPRVSE/autoexec.nt popup and the persistent NVIDIA “new hardware” prompts. The following targeted, non‑redundant measures address those gaps and give a safer path to full recovery.

Network and hosts cleanup — confirm the TCP/IP DNS setting is set to obtain DNS automatically (or replace it with a trusted resolver). Verify Internet Options → Connections → LAN Settings shows no proxy. Edit the hosts file at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts to remove any nonstandard mappings (the default hosts contains only 127.0.0.1 localhost) and then flush the local resolver cache:

ipconfig /flushdns

Removing locked files and services — when files or services resist deletion, perform offline removal from the Recovery Console or a rescue CD/USB so the OS isn’t locking them. Services can be removed from an administrative command prompt with the Service Controller tool; back up the registry before making changes and use caution:

sc delete ServiceName

Repairing the autoexec.nt popup and the NVIDIA prompts — that MS‑DOS suitability message usually indicates a missing or corrupted System32\autoexec.nt. Restore the repair copy and run the system file checker:

copy C:\Windows\Repair\autoexec.nt C:\Windows\System32\autoexec.nt
sfc /scannow

Phantom hardware prompts are best handled from Device Manager (System → Hardware → Device Manager) with “Show hidden devices” enabled; uninstall phantom/unknown entries and then reinstall the official NVidia driver package.

Post‑clean steps — clear all System Restore points (malware can live there) and create a fresh restore point, reinstall/repair any broken drivers only from vendor packages, and change all sensitive passwords only from a known‑clean machine. If uncertainty about complete removal remains after the above, a clean OS reinstall is the most reliable final remedy. A fresh HijackThis/scan output will typically show any remaining persistence for targeted removal.

Erf... you've got more than a few nasties indicated in htat log. Please do the following:

You will need to disconnect from the Internet for some of the following, so you should print out the following instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Run at least two or three of the following online anti-virus/anti-spyware scans and let them fix what they can:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914
http://www.pandasoftware.com/active...n_principal.htm

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

2. Download, install, and run the following (free) detection and removal tools (use each program's online update function before running them to make sure you have the most current updates installed). Also update your version of ewido and run that.

After each utility completes its fixes, reboot before continuing on to the next utility; have the utilities fix all of the problematic/malicious items they find:

Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta - &displaylang=en
Ad Aware SE Personal -
SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/

3. Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Cookies
2. Local Settings\Temp
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

4. Reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the scan report log that ewido generated.

Hi DMR,

I've done as you suggested and here is the latest HijackThis log.

What should I do next? =)

OK- that's much better, but some infections remain. Please do the following:

*
You must have all web browsers closed in order for HijackThis to fully perform its fixes, so you should print out the following instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

1. Uninstall the SurfAccuracy program through your Add/Remove Programs control panel if possible.

2. Have HijackThis fix the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

3. Open the Services utility in your Administrative Tools control panel.

- In the list of services, locate the service named "Remote Packet Capture Protocol" or "rpcapd" and double-click on it.

- In the General tab of the Properties window that opens, click the Stop button if the service is not already stopped.

- Once the service is stopped, choose Disabled in the "Startup Type" drop-down menu and then click OK. Close the Services utility after that.

B) Run HijackThis again, do another scan, and put a check in the box to the left of the O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 entry, and then click "Fix Checked".

C) Once HJT finishes the fix, click on the "Config" button in the lower right corner of HijackThis' main window. In the next window click on the "Misc Tools" button at the top then click the "Delete an NT service" button. Type the following in the box and click OK:

rpcapd

- Repeat the above procedure for the NetDDE Server (NetDDEsrv) service entry.

4. Reboot into safe mode again.

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Locate and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuamk032.exe
C:\WINDOWS\kzqv.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-58-12-0000132.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\mc-58-12-0000132.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\services.exe

msmsgr.exe
msnmsgrs.exe
yahoomsg.exe

- Locate and delete the following folders entirely:

C:\Program Files\DNS
C:\Program Files\Nmzod
C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy
C:\ProgramFiles\WinPcap

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

5. Reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log.

p.s. There is a pop-up that says "C:\WINDOWS\System32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the apllication." And it keeps popping up once in a while. Is this anything to worry about, and how do I get rid of it?

p.s. During startup I always get this "new hardware detected" screen, which askes me to find the driver for NVADIA. Can I disable this message?

Hi DMR, I haven't been able to browse on the Net. It is due to anything I removed up there? I'm connected to my ISP but not the DNS server.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The "Preview Adservice" and "System service76" entries in your latest log indicate a couple of new "unwanted guests". I'm logging off for the night now, but I'll post removal instructions when I log back in tomorrow.
