I think I need some help here. I have had a trojan horse virus and have removed some of it (I think). However, I still have a flashing alert in my system tray which says that I have a virus and wants to direct me to a web site where I can purchase all sorts of software to remove this infection. ( Like I am going to purchase from a site which first infected my machine!!!!)

I have run ewido, CCleaner, SmitRem and HJT. However, I have an additional problem in that I can not reboot into Safe Mode. Every attempt ends in a crash with the blue screen and a line which says "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR _EQUAL".

The HJT log is as follows (if I have this posted correctly):

Hi, and welcome to DaniWeb. Lets start by running HJT again and selecting Do system scan only. Then place a check next to these items.

- Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit Software Solutions

Now run Pocket Killbox:

Choose Tools -> Delete Temp Files and click the RED X.

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion; say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note many of the file list below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpBCC8.tmp

I see that you have ewido installed your computer. Please update it the newest version and run it. Let it remove whatever it finds. Then please post that log, along with a new HJT log.

Ok, I did all that you suggested. Here is the Ewido log

I don't seem to have the little nasy Virus Alert popup now. However, when the computer boots I get an alert from SpyBot that something is trying to change my home page. I can not get rid of this until I close Spybot. Then I get a message that Symantec Systemworks 5 can not repair this and I need to reinstall Norton. Could this be the virus trying to trick me into shutting down Norton to reinstall it and, while Norton is not running, the virus could reinstall itself or wreak other havoc?

BTW, Any ideas as to why I can not boot into safe mode? (see previous message) I can not do it using F8 on startup. Also, if I check the Safe Mode using msconfig, then the computer locks with the blue screen every time. (I found this out the hard way, and had to use the repair function from the Win XP CD to allow me to rename the Boot.INI file. Then I could boot normally and then use MSCONFIG to uncheck the safe mode box.

Thanks for all you are doing to help.

Alrite, you're infected with a SpyAxe variant.

Let's begin by downloading
SmitfraudFix. Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
______________________________

Next, download the trial version of Ewido.

  • Install Ewido.
  • When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
  • The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.

You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.

  • On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
  • Click on Start.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.

Next, download CCleaner, specifically choosing the most recent version.

Then, follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
3. Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
4. After the new window appears select the "View" tab.
5. Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders".
6. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders".
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types".
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files". 9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now, install the program. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it):

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\History
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies
C:\Windows\Prefetch

After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and inside this, be sure your open to the 'Windows' tab. Inside, check the box labeled 'Custom Files and Folders'.

______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer, so it will take some time to run. When done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?". Type Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

If your computer does not restart automatically, do it yourself manually.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt, located at C:\rapport.txt. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Now, run CCleaner, scanning only under the 'Cleaner' tab. You might need to run it several times to remove all the junk.
After running it, be sure to empty the Recycle bin.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.

  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.

If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.

  • Click Save Report button
  • Save the report to your Desktop

Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install them. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.
______________________________

In the return post, include the contents of C:\rapport.txt, the Ewido scan log, and a new HJT log.

Thanks.

I am in the process of getting the files...takes about 3 hours for one of the scans.

I can not boot into safe mode, every attempt ends with a blue screen of death. Can we do this without the safe mode (I hope)?

Any ideas how to get around this problem?

Thanks

Hmm, well I'm having a slight feeling this blue-screen of death is due to a virus.

With luck, the scans we're gonna run after this fix might clear it.

And ya, the fix I jus posted doesn't need safe mode (I think...)

Heh if I missed somethin, post back and we'll work from there.

Thanks.

Thanks, I will get those logs posted as soon as possible.
Neil

I hope this shows that the problem is extinct.

BTW, everytime I boot the computer, I get a box on the screen showing that Windows Installer is trying to start, and then a box of similar size appears over that installation box which says that Norton 2005 can not repair virus and I should uninstall and reinstall Norton.

If I click the cancel button on the Norton box, the windows box reappars, and then they both dissapear after I again click cancel.

Is this part of the virus, or is Norton corrupted? I have Systemworks 2006 but have been afraid to install it until the infection is gone.

Thanks again.

There is some softweare on your computer that I am not to sure about. Please go to Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove Programs. THen uninstall (If found): Cookie Crusher.

Now run HJT and check the following items.

Cookie Crusher and Wallpaper Changer are programs which normally run on this computer. Cooke Crusher intercepts requests for cookies and allows you to reject, accept always or conditionally accept the cookie. Wallpaper changer is a program which runs once on startup and changes the wallpaper (using a set of bmp files) each time the computer boots.

I can eliminate them if you think it wise, but they have not created a problem in years.

Here is the new HJT log. Let me know if you want Cookie Crusher and Wallpaper Changer removed.

What are the two O9 entries and the O16 entry?

Gotta get to church, will be back about 3:00 PM PDT. Thanks.

You can fix the 09, the 016 is related to Java, and is legit. Are you using a proxy server? If not you may want to fix this.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555

Exactly what are the problems you are having still?

Here is a new HJT log. The only problem that I have seen lately is that IE's home page has been changed to some spyware remover's site. Also, I keep getting a box on boot which shows that Microsoft Installer is trying to install something. Immediately over this box is one which says that Norton 2005 can not repair the files and that I need to uninstall and then reinstall Norton 2005.

I have been hesitant to uninstall/reinstall Norton in case this is a message from the virus and a trick to get me to disable my anti-virus software.

Please look at the new HJT file and let me know what you think.

In addition, I have not been able to boot into safe mode...getting a blue screen everytime I try. I don't know if Windows is corrupted or if this is also from the virus.

In general, things seem to be much better after I have done the things you suggested and the bug may indeed be dead and all that I have to do is reinstall Norton.

Thanks for all who are helping.
